Match The Grades

Below are three cards that were graded PSA 8, PSA 9 and PSA 10. Match the cards with their grade:

I actively collect Kirby Puckett. I have collections of Michael Jordan, Emmitt Smith, Roberto Clemente, Dwight Gooden, Tom Seaver, Errict Rhett and Evan Longoria.

Love that card. Gimme the top and bottom ones. Middle is weak sauce.

Wow, the 8 sure looks nicer than the 9!

I am going to say the rough edges hurt more than helped (I like them personally). Since none are close to dead centered(bottom card is best), and all 3 have scuffs on the blue border edges, I will base my grade on the rough cut alone.

FYI ... if you're going to hide the grade, probably best to hide the cert # also. ;)

  • Its 8, 9, 10.

IMO, this "inconsistency" is completely unacceptable. The 8 looks the best and imo neither the 9 nor 10 should have received those grades with that bad of a rough cut. The 8 looks perfect. And "you know who" is the seller if you didn't figure that out with the pictures already.

I think the best centering is the top card. Its 55/45 or better both ways. That bottom card looks 60/30 to 65/35 U/D.

I love that card too. Its one of a few specific cards that I collect.

Third example is clearly superior, imo.

First two are OC T/B. Second one is a bit OC L/R, also.

    Third one is dead centered.

Rough cut from the factory doesn't bother me (nor does it impact the grade), but I acknowledge some feel differently.

This^ Rough cut doesn't bother me on sets where it's standard or very common. I wouldn't touch an 84F Update with it, there's plenty of clean cut examples out there.

To quote PSA on their own photo grading guide -

“When it comes to PSA 9s and PSA 10s, the difference can often be extraordinarily subtle”

I have always been confused how grading is tougher on modern cards than vintage with one uniform definition of grades.
