Radical solution to NBA teams tanking to get top draft picks.

As with virtually any other US business that is not professional sports, get rid of the draft. Money talks. Everyone 18 and above is a free agent. A FREE AGENT.

Want to sign him to a one year or 20 year contract, go for it.

And flush the salary cap as well.

Got a knot in my stomach thinking about a poor schmuck with Mavericks season tickets trudging to the taxpayer funded arena to see a team throw half a seasons worth of games.

The Mavs have nothing compared to this past 4 year tank job by the 76ers.

Can you imagine getting a law degree or a degree in any field, then the law firms have a draft. You have to work for whoever claims you, no negotiating for a position with another firm.

And even worse, you could end up in Cleveland or Milwaukee.

this is essentially what happens. the trend in College today is "Internship" as a part of a degree. each University has partnerships with Corporations within whatever the discipline is that's being studied. after graduation that Company is the natural choice for employment although there is no commitment involved.

if you consider Law and schools like Harvard and Yale, the most prestigious Firms partner with them and "Draft" the top of each graduating class. of course there's no obligation.

--- I don't think what we are currently seeing with the Warriors in the NBA is relevant, but what we have seen with the Patriots in the NFL is an aberration of what the Draft is intended to avoid. they have managed to stay at the top despite having low draft picks. the best example for how the system is designed to work is MLB. that's where free agency started, I think it was Curt Flood. keeping the draft and locking players in to a Team at the start of their career is a good thing, then they are free. it seems like a good compromise.

Between all of the "One & Done's",Foreign players & Sophomores/Juniors leaving college early for the draft, these ideas above really wouldn't work. There are many more players from those three groups i just mentioned going into the draft every year, especially the top of the draft, than there are 4 year players coming out of college.

Another reason why there would never be a free-for-all type of system where you go where you want is the NBA is basically a destination team/city league. Without the draft, some cities would never manage to sign a top player. ex: Players like Anthony Davis,Giannis Antetonkoumpo & Russell Westbrook to name a few wouldn't be playing where they are now and a team like Golden State wouldn't have the type of roster it currently has.

The NBA commish can whine about all of the "tanking" going on but this is nothing the league hasn't seen before, its just getting more notice now because of social media and a team like Philly that turned into a 4 year tank. Not to mention this upcoming draft is widely considered one of the better top heavy drafts in years. There are 7-8 legit star-type prospects expected to go early in this draft.

On a sidenote, with all of the talk here about ratings going down during football season, the NBA's ratings have been up compared to the other sports. All of this "tank" talk isn't affecting the overall ratings.

The best way to get rid of it is actually just a minor change, nothing radical.

Every team that misses the playoffs go into the lottery with one chance, and the draft balls all come out of the hopper to determine the order...not a system where the order is known before hand, and only one spot is really unknown, like is currently in place. You would have the same chance of winning the lottery if you have the worst record or if you miss the playoffs on a tie breaker. The order would truly be random, not based on standings other than to determine which teams are in the lottery.
