My Grandfather's "Babe Ruth" Baseball

Greetings,

My grandfather obtained this ball (see photobucket link below) in 1933 when the all-star game was in Chicago. He worked in Chicago at the time and had a connection to Babe Ruth's office via a co-worker. The co-worker got him the ball. It has sat in a cupboard in our living room since then and has passed down through the family to me. It is certainly a 1933 official American League baseball (red & blue stitches; Harridge President), however the Ruth signature is questionable. First of all, it has quotes around Babe. He supposedly stopped doing that in the late 20s. If so, why would they be on a 1933 ball? Also, I have never seen a Ruth signature with that curve coming from the bottom of the R. I have never even seen a Ruth secretarial signature with that curve. My grandfather or father never gave me many details about this ball, however I imagine someone in Ruth's office must have signed it. I think it is a pretty good likeness except for the quotes and the curve. Any opinion as to who signed this and/or value would be appreciated. Thank You.

I'm afraid that's not his signature for the very reason you stated. The "R" in Ruth is wrong and so is the "B" in Babe. Sorry.

  • Thanks for the reply, Piggs. I thought so. What do you think the value might be (if any) as a 1933 American League ball with a Babe Ruth office signature. Thanks.

I'm sorry I don't have any idea on the value of the ball.

Too bad it's some kind of "secretarial" signature.

Have no idea what it's worth - if anything.

    Here's his wife's sig:

    and the ball:

I wouldn't be surprised if his wife tried to sign her husband's sig like "he" would've?

Still a great memento from your grandfather - and keep in mind? "He" was excited and thought it came from the Babe and back then? Priceless "and" all that counts.

  • Thanks for all of the comments, good people. If it was Mrs. Ruth, she did a pretty good job! I guess this will remain the mystery Babe Ruth ball and remain in our living room as part of Grandfather's legacy (along with my fond memory of him taking me to Wrigley Field to watch the Cubs when I was a kid).
