COIN OF THE DAY: 1939(d) JEFFERSON NICKEL GRADING PCGS-MS66FS!! ONLY 3 GRADED HIGHER!! (6/12/02)
The coin of the day for Wednesday is the 1939(d) Jefferson Nickel grading PCGS-MS66FS!! This is one of the key dates of the Jefferson series. A few MS66FS coins have surfaces recently (most likely from a roll or two that were discovered) which is why I can offer this blast "white", high quality piece at $1425 obo (which I will consider). I have handled all (3) of the PCGS-MS67FS coins of this date and while the steps on most of them were nice, the steps on this particular MS66FS example are fantastic!! Approaching 5 3/4 STRONG steps!! A very "PQ" piece worthy of the finest Mint State Jefferson nickel collection.
When you consider that an original roll of 1939(d) nickels could set you back as much as $2,500.00 (if you can even find one out there), it appears unlikely to me that the pop on this particular date in gem FS grade will mushroom out of hand in the future. I believe this date in grades MS66FS and better will become an important coin in the MS Jefferson series. YOU JUST CAN'T EASILY FIND 1939(d) NICKELS IN PCGS-MS66FS OUT THERE THAT LOOK THIS NICE!! This coin is selling for close to the same money that a 1995(p) nickel in PCGS-MS67FS just sold for on ebay!!! Why hasn't this dated nickel in this grade moved higher in price? I believe it is simply because there are about a half dozen to ten serious PCGS MS Jefferson collectors right now and about 10-12 coins that exist in 66FS and better grade. Hence, enough coins to go around FOR NOW. I believe, however, it would only take another (5)-(10) serious nickel collectors to greatly influence this series. While some new collectors might settle for grades MS65 and lower, others will want MS66FS and better coins of this date!
This lusterous, brilliant "white" coin is the only coin I have and I will sell it on a first come, first served basis. If I do not sell the coin during this "coin of the day" special, it is off to ebay with a higher asking price.
Please PM me if you are interested in this coin. Wondercoin.
