PWCC Introducing Market Indices

Glad PWCC is taking the lead on this. Long overdue, but complex because of subjectivity in the grading market, which creates price fluctuations for same-graded cards. The baseline will be interesting, as someone over on Net54 started an Index reflective of the overall vintage/modern card industry. I hope they do one for unopened.

How long before we can leverage returns on cards without taking possession of them? IRS still doesn't allow collectibles with your 401K money. But hell, you can buy some of the biggest pieces of crap stocks/bonds from Wall Street with that money, and never get to cherish a Mickey Mantle in your hand.

This quote is from their website:

"Outperforming the S&P 500 Index for over 10 years.
The trading card market is about more than securing memories and collecting our heroes. This emerging marketplace represents an alternative asset class with real opportunity for investment growth and diversification. We’ve been tracking the performance of the most valuable sports trading cards over the past decade, and the returns are compelling, to say the least. Soon PWCC will unveil a series of market indices, unlike anything ever conceived, run entirely on market sale statics, and designed to convey the overall performance of the marketplace over time"

Collecting PSA 9's from 1970-1977. Raw 9's from 72-77. Raw 10's from '78-'83.

  • Sounds like what StockX was able to do for the sneaker collecting world. Interesting times indeed.

The biggest lesson I've learned in this hobby, and in life, is that if you have a strong conviction, you owe it to yourself to see it through. Don't sell yourself, or your investments, short. Unless the facts change. Then sell it all.

Did they include the window of realized prices of the Buyers Group where THEY were aware of and allowed the market manipulation drive upwards? And the bottom to fall out that left a lot of 'collectors' with their Richards in their hands.....
A good reflection for their business model. But with the piss poor policeing of actual shilling, completed auctions and inside trading. There would need to be some serious regulating. Kudos to them for pumping their brand and presenting new levels. Does this legitimize my hobby now and put me on a new level of investor??

I always had a desire, albeit an abstract one, of someday watching trading cards trade on an exchange..... at least having a more timely and accurate pricing that changes more than just once a month. By creating variations with limited numbers and special autographs the hobby can really create a demand that gets revved up quicker than having to buy and hold for 25-35 years. Heck, a lot of cards we bought in the 80's are still waiting to hit an upward price swing expansion.

The one card I bought on eBay to flip on the pit, the buy price dropped $200 before I even had it in hand

The Pit is exactly what I was thinking. Did that ever catch on? Is there much activity there?

There are many commodities, even ones that are deemed legitimate, that are victim to market manipulation driven my algorithms crafted with the singular goal of manipulating the trading patterns. I don't care if it is sports cards, Apple stock, gold or Picassos, when there is big money involved, the market movers will ALWAYS be in the game to profit from manipulation of perception. As with anything in life, education and patience are your allies. Emotional decisions tend to be lead us down a path of failure and regret. Great conversation on this topic.
