Whose nickname essentially became their first name.

Subject to significant revision.

Babe Ruth
Magic Johnson
Satchel Page
Tiger Woods
Cy Young
Babe Didrickson
Refrigerator Perry
Gates Brown*
Rocket Ismael
Boog Powell

On the fence as to whether "Air" Jordan should qualify. Close...but I'll say no.

I am already in trouble with my Cy Young pick. His career ended over a century ago.

When anyone is doing just "top ten athletes", in my opinion, #1 on the list starts and stops at Jim Thorpe...all the others are vying for second place.

I agree, Jim Thorpe should be on the top-heck, they have him on the newly released native American coins, quite the honor. they are my 10 favorites, did not put them in order though

Deion Sanders and Bo Jackson should be on any list in my opinion

The thread is top ten athletes whose nickname essentially became their first name. Not top ten athletes of all time

It would be very difficult for anyone, even his agent, to put Refrigerator Perry on a list of top ten athletes of all time. LOL

  • BrickBrick Posts: 4,981 ✭✭✭✭✭

Perhaps. But it is on a top ten list of nicknames.

My bad as OP. Should have put that in the title line. All top ten lists make good forum conversation.

Having the nickname used as their first name makes this more of a challenge... Seems we have yet to name some that should have been mentioned already...

    Red Grange
    Sugar Ray Robinson
    Sugar Ray Lenard

I considered the Sugar Rays. Just looked them up and Robinson is good as he real name was Walker. Leonard though was already Ray so the Sugar was an add on.

A better than decent quarterback...I'll add Norman Julius "Boomer" Esiason to the list.

The oversight was my omission of Red Grange in my first post. I was also thinking of Howard Hopalong Cassady which should please the Ohio State crowd

  • I don't know about #'s 2-10; what I do know is Bo Jackson unequivocally tops this list.

Not sure these all qualify but some of my favorite nicknames or something like it:

    1. World B Free
    2. McFilthy and McNasty (Washington Bullets Jeff Ruland and Rick Mahorn)
    3. The Mad Hungarian (Baseball closer Al Hrabosky)
    4. Too Tall Ed Jones
    5. Mean Joe Greene
    6. Hacksaw Reynolds
    7. Dennis Oilcan Boyd

Maybe I will think of a few more later.
