I’m not going to argue that Mantle, Mays or any other sports icon is or isn’t a jerk but I’m partially thinking some of these guys were jerks at card signings basically because it was a “Job” for the day and knowing that these adults had dollar signs in their eyes while getting these auto’s. Regardless if a sports icon is a nice guy or not it has zero bearing on how good they were
I was at a convention recently and got on the topic of HOF Stars that aren't selling for what they are really worth for whatever reason (undervalued)....Stan Musial was one, Yogi Berra another and Wayne Gretzky surprisingly another....all of his cards outside his RC in GEM MINT condition selling for less than expected for the greatest of all time in his sport.

I think some were crossing this thread with the 100 top pitchers thread...and how possibly personalities can influence someone's rank on their list. Admittedly, wrong or right, if it's a close call, i think liking or not liking a player can influence anyone's list including mine.
In any event, not much new to talk about in between football and baseball seasons. I'm not a basketball or hockey fan, so for me i figure this conversation is as good as it gets for right now.
Let's be honest. Stan Musial is not a household name...but if he had played for the Yankees he would be.
Stan Musial should be on everyone's vintage card collecting list if they knew just how great the man was inside and outside of baseball.
I base my views on a player based on his on field abilities not how they are liked or not liked. And I have to respectively disagree with you on Baseball not being affected as players are bigger, stronger and faster than players from the 20's era. There were some players back then that would do OK today, but not as good as then. And I really believe that Ruth could not play in todays game.

Saying that Ruth could not play in today's game is a ridiculous statement. Ruth possessed superior skill versus his peers during the era in which he played which is all we should be basing our evaluations on. Also, the notion that Ruth was not athletic is a very common misconception. For most of his career, he was actually quite athletic for his time (as the above height and weight data indicate). Of course, had he been born 50 years later and had access to modern conditioning and training regiments, he'd be a completely different player. This is the problem with comparing players from different eras. But the stats speak for themselves, and there is absolutely no question whatsoever that Ruth was one of the greatest individuals to play the game of baseball. To assert otherwise is an exercise in foolishness.

Thread started out okay and spiraled into that tired old my hero is better than yours pissing contest .
I think it was about home runs originally. My opinion if we want to see home runs steroid use should be mandatory for all players. Pump them all so full of drugs that the day after they retire they fall over dead. Level the playing field , no more unfair advantage for juicers if you force everyone to use the stuff.
The thread spiraled out of control after the title of the thread was posted. Sorry but regardless of what anyone says or thinks right wrong or indifferent Barry Bonds is the single season HR record holder until MLB disqualifies it.

I've got Barry Bonds 4th on my all time greatest hitters list. Some won't put Bonds on their list at all, and that's just silly.
I can't stand Barry Bonds personally, but he should be in the Hall of Fame.
Of course Stanton and others want 61 recognized as the record. It’s more achievable.

@Justacommeman ...why would so many pundits agree? Could it be b/c in game 160 of the year Barry Bonds is as fresh as he was in game #4 due to steroids?

Contrast a Bonds personality to a Roberto Clemente.......its a novel. Mark Mcgwire took the same 'Roids and he is beloved compared to Barry Bonds.

I'm looking forward to one day baseball being played on the moon, and seeing those really long home runs. That will be so cool.
