Busted a 1980 Topps BB Box, Looking for Grading Opinions (UPDATED W/ MORE PICS)

AshleyBrownAshleyBrown Posts: 69 ✭✭

Me & a friend opened a 1980 Topps Baseball Box last night. It was purchased last week from BBCE & was in great shape. Overall the cards were in great shape. We pulled 2 Ryan's, 3 Carew's, 2 Rose's and and most of the other stars. We did pull one Henderson RC. Unfortunately the Henderson had chipping along the bottom edge & was little off centered. I did, however, pull out about 55-60 cards that I felt were worth grading. I have included pics (taken with my phone) so if any of you that would like to assist with your opinions I would really appreciate it.

Thanks for posting your results. I'm sure it was a fun rip and I hope you had a good time. Looking at the cards you put up here, I would not suggest any of those as being worthy of subbing for grading though.

I agree with the above. Just based on the scans, I do not believe any of the shown cards have a chance at pulling a 10. I also do not believe any can pull a 9. Of course, just my opinion!

  • Posted wrong Gossage pic. That one had stains...Here are the final few pics. I did not post the low pop commons, but there are a few that were good.

  • Thanks for the input. I may post some of the commons later. It was fun rip for sure. We are doing the following boxes next week sometime. '82 Topps Baseball, '84 Topps Football, and another '80 Topps Baseball

Just from the box being handled and shipped, etc for around 38 years, the cards can develop slight corner wear, fraying, chipping, etc. The Rose even looks like it has a ding on the lower right corner which could drop it to a 6.

Overall some very nice cards, but my opinion is there may not be any 9's there. But send some in to PSA and find out. :)

Thanks. I totally get the wear & am not disappointed at all. Just posting to get the opinions of collectors more well versed in the grading aspect. I have collected since the late 70's and have sold my entire collection and started over 3 times, but I ALWAYS COME BACK. I mainly collect 50's & 60's and some newer stuff with my son. I have wanted to bust some 70-80's boxes for awhile & me & a buddy decided to do it together.

    carew no
    Yount no
    Ryan is too OC no

If you want to send a card in I would first check the value in psa 9 and 8 on some
It may not really be worth the grading fees

On any common you will have to get a psa 10 or your busted

    good luck

From experience, I would offer the following advice: I ripped a box of 86 Topps a few years back for fun. I considered subbing a handful of them, but I know that's a tough year. I took all the stars that I thought would grade well, then went through them and pulled out the ones I thought wouldn't get a 10. Then went through em again. And again. I whittled it down to 3 cards and sent those in. Came back with something like 2 9's and an 8. If that was my best, I knew the rest weren't worth sending in.

I would take on the same approach. Possibly look around eBay for what 9's and 10's go for. With 80's cards, unless you are set building, it might not be worth it to mail in commons.

Good luck with it and the future rips!

To clarify the two posts above, you'll want to check the ebay SOLD items, not the items listed for sale, if you want an idea of what price it takes to actually move your item instead of keeping it in your stock. That is, if the reason you're grading is for resale. Otherwise, if you're grading for subsequent keeping in your own collection, I'd suggest you purchase cards that are already graded. Not just the commons, but often plenty of stars can be had in PSA 9 for sets like 1980 Topps for a little over half the total costs associated with grading fees if you spend time shopping around.

You did it the right way...for fun first, and for possible 9's and 10's second. And it's so nice to have your son involved in the hobby...it's a great hobby indeed.

Good luck with the other rips!

  • Thanks for all the input. I really do appreciate it. I have sent in newer cards and had a great deal of success with the subs. Most the other cards I have sent were 50's-60's where I was expected PSA 3-7 so I was not as strict on judging them, just basically taking the grade given.

Here are the final few pics. Sorry to send in groups, but I have had to put out a few fires at work.

    Thanx for posting.

Saw some really solid cards. Too bad about the Henderson but definitely worth having in your collection.
