Best way to crack the case on a SAE from the mint???

I just received my proof SAE from the mint. It looks good enough to submit to pcgs.(maybe a pr69).What is the best way to crack the case? Not much room between the coin and the case.Any ideas? image

If you inspect the case carefully , you'll see a " lip " on it. You can insert a fine knife blade there , and just move it around the whole case. After a few times around , you'll feel it open up , and can then pop it open. The case remains intact , and you can re-use it .

  • You can always just send the coin in its "case" to PCGS and let them open it. Thats what I do every year, and have had super results.

** EXCEPT ** when you send a very AWESOME 1997 silver proof set in its original packaging, and you KNOW the coins will all grade 69.... and then they come back all 69 EXCEPT THE dog-gone Kennedy which NOW HAS HAIRLINES and is pr67dcam. and your main purpose of sending the 1997 proof set was to get the kennedy and the Roosevelt graded 69 for your reg set!!

I send all py proof sets right to PCGS, and let them crack them out. I too have had great results.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • That is no fun image One thing I have found that is very helpful in pre grading proofs is the use of florescent light. Any hairlines stand out clear as day. I have looked at many proof under "standard" lighting that look fine, and found out otherwise using a different light source. maybe this will help image

  • WHEN you send in the coins still in the mint holder, how do you fill in the paper work as for the line for each coin and do you send 2 x 2 ????????? I like this idea!!!!!
  • You fill out the paperwork like you would normally, and place the coin in its holder inside the 2x2. Put the tag listing the info i.e invoice number and line number on the 2x2 not the coin holder image

  • Hi Greg,The proof set has 5 coins in one holder, are you saying send these in this holder and separate 2 x 2 filled out as normal (no coins).
  • We were discussing the Siver Eagle, which is a single coin that will fit into a flip. I understand that PCGS will grade an entire proof set that is still in it's case, but I haven't ever done it. perhaps someone else can help on that one.

  • I thought there was an extra charge if it was sent in in anything other than a 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 flip . Is this incorrect ? Sending it in the mint lucite holder would incur an extra charge.
