In a recent BST a forum member was looking to acquire
Sandberg cellos with the Ryno rookie on top. Another forum member
stated that that those cellos would be counterfeit. Is this
true or was the forum member joking?

Sandberg should normally fall in the back section of an 83 cello pack. One on front wouldn't be a guaranteed fake, but IMO doesn't have much collectibility as an unopened pack because of the stigma associated with it.
I thought that since cello's are a see-thru single pack,
all cards in the set had an equal chance to appear
on top of the pack.
No, depending on the year, they were collated with either low or high letter sheet cards on top and the opposite on back.

Thank you baz518 and grote15 for explaining this.
I would not necessarily say that all are counterfeits. I have had several slabbed by BBCE that I am quite sure are legit
I have one slabbed PSA as well. I can't imagine with all the production of those years that it is IMPOSSIBLE for any card not to be on front or back for that matter.

Manny is correct in saying that not all are necessarily counterfeits but in the case of an aberration, you should also be seeing cards from same low or high sheets on top of the pack and cards from the opposite low or high sheets on bottom half of the pack. Packs were not collated in this era with a mish-mash of cards from different sheets.
In the case of Sandberg, which is from the "B" sheet, all other cards in his half of the pack should be from A, B or C sheets while cards from other half of the pack should be from D, E or F sheets.
I'm sure you can ask Brett (mrpeanut39) to confirm this, as he has probably opened more 1983 cello packs than anyone else on the board.

Sorry just saw your thread... I wasn't joking. For my money I would not buy a Sandberg on top cello, while not guaranteed to be fake the odds are it is and if it happened to be original when you'd ever go to sell it in the future it will likely bring less than a back showing pack because of cautious educated buyers steering clear of the pack. Full disclosure I do own one myself showing on top graded by PSA but I guess that's the exception to prove the rule.
Tim did a nice job of explaining the collation of 1983, if you want a nice cello with a rookie showing on top do yourself a favor and buy a Gwynn or a Fleer Sandberg.
