Suggestions for Purchasing Wax Boxes

I was looking for advice on some good "fun" wax boxes to purchase and open with the possibility (however slight) of landing a few valuable cards. Prefer baseball but open to other possibilities. Looking mostly in the range of $100-$200 per box but willing to go higher. I realize much of this is based on personal preference, however, any suggestions are welcome. I'm a bit naive on the concept that wax boxes have been "pored over" already. Is it imperative to only purchase authenticated boxes? What's the risk otherwise. Thanks!

If you're in that price range and also sticking with baseball, I think 1980's OPC & Leaf are fun choices.

    Hiya Banner and welcome buddy!

In the 200+ range would be 1983 Topps - you've got 3 HOF RC's in Ryno, Boggs and Gwynn along with a host of nice cards of HOF'ers.

I'll have to add - the operative word might be "valuable?" Hard to find a box in the 100 -200 range to land a super valuable card. Any of the RC's if in 10 are quite nice IMO.

  • Thank you so much for the suggestions. 1983 Topps looks very tempting, the prices are a little less for 1985 but I like the 1983 design a bit better. Still looking into the OPC and Leaf's. The core of my "youth" collecting was in 1974, 1975 (mini), and 1976. Of course, there was no way I would have NOT opened those packs/boxes then! Those boxes now are way above my budget. I came back to the hobby in 1989 and stocked up on 1987 wax boxes (ugh!).

Welcome! O Pee Chee boxes and cards are fun to collect and can often times be had for a fraction of the cost of Topps. You came to the right place to get opinions too!

  • Follow up. Decided to spring for a Hobby Box of 2018 Topps. That has been quite rewarding opening a couple of packs a day to check out what is current. Then, I found a decent price on a BBCE box of 1983 Topps (they've gone up in price last couple months it seems) from BBCE. That is in transit to me and I look forward to busting it open. Or keeping it sealed. I don't know. But thanks again for the suggestions.
