Some thing VRBO did. It's about fees and taking control of the payment process. When they control the payment, they can act as judge/jury. MIght work out better for sellers, who knows.

Yup ,still trying to process what it is for.
here it is for everyone else.

eBay is happy to announce plans to further improve the customer experience by intermediating payments on our Marketplace platform. In doing so, eBay will manage the payments flow, simplifying the end-to-end experience for both buyers and sellers. We have signed an agreement with Adyen, a leading global payments processor, to become our primary payments processing partner. PayPal, a long-time eBay partner, will be a payments option at checkout for eBay buyers.

You do not need to take any action at this time. The transition to full payments intermediation will be a multi-year journey.

Over the past three years, eBay has transformed its business to drive the best choice, most relevance and most powerful selling platform. Building out our payments capabilities is the next step in that strategy.

Payments intermediation will bring significant benefits for eBay sellers. You can expect a simplified pricing structure, more predictable access to funds, and most sellers can expect their costs of payments processing to be reduced. We’re also working on ways to provide sellers a central place to track and manage their business, which can soon include payments information.

By offering buyers more choice in how they pay and expanding payment options into more geographies, eBay believes sellers will be able to reach more buyers and improve conversion.

The transition to full payments intermediation will be a multi-year journey. eBay will begin intermediation on a small scale in North America starting in the second half of 2018, expanding in 2019 under the terms of the Operating Agreement with PayPal. In 2021, we expect to have transitioned a majority of Marketplace customers to the new payments experience.

Again, you do not need to take any action at this time. As eBay gets closer to the initial phase of its intermediation efforts, we will share more details about this process and next steps for sellers. In the meantime, please read the eBay Inc announcement for further information. For any immediate questions or to share feedback, please email paymentsinfo@ebay.com.

We’re looking forward to what’s next, and to getting there with you.

As always, thank you for selling on eBay.

I got it and don't get it; What if I don't want it? Here is the specifics; ebay is killing their company

    _**Specifically:

As eBay transitions to a fully intermediated platform, it will work closely with its sellers to ensure that its new payment capabilities reflect their needs and deliver value to them.
To enable payments in their eBay accounts, sellers should expect to provide eBay with some additional payments-related data and transition to a new relationship with eBay that includes integrated payments capabilities.
Sellers will be required to complete these steps in order to continue selling on eBay, and it is anticipated that this transition for sellers will occur no later than one year after the expiration of eBay’s Operating Agreement with PayPal, i.e., by July 2021.
As eBay gets closer to the initial phase of its intermediation efforts, it will share more details about this process and next steps for its sellers. In the meantime, sellers can contact eBay now at paymentsinfo@ebay.com to stay up-to-date on eBay’s payments efforts and timing, share feedback and ask questions.

Could this be their way of preventing transactions from happening off ebay?

I just googled what is Adyen and one of the answers was this "A payment processing company that 'specializes' in international payments. " Could this possibly be taking over for Paypal? Maybe another forum member may know more.

no; as long as an email or contact info {ie. address} exists and/or buyers and sellers have direct contact info; if they so desire to do off ebay transactions they could.

This is competition, EBay bought PayPal, sold it a few years back. I don’t remember the whole story. Not sure if they had to sell it and now here we are.

  • Maybe the first step in accepting crypto-currency?

Ebay bought PayPal a couple months after it's first IPO, split it off in 2015 but still used them as their main payment processor. I do wonder what other information they are going to require from sellers... but it will definitely improve the user experience. Being able to pay within eBay's website will be a nice change that I'm looking forward to.

I don't know about you but every purchase I make on ebay gets paid without having to leave ebay. It literally takes 3 seconds, maybe 5-6 seconds if i add a message, and my transaction is paid for at the cart/checkout page.

Well, eBay has always liked to fix things that are not broken.

You are leaving eBay, it just seems like you're not because you've linked your accounts. Until eBay stops allowing sellers to selectively choose PayPal as the only allowed payment method... that'll be the case. The only exception would be if you've never bought from a seller that required PayPal. I only accept (and pay with) PayPal because of the extra security layer... as does many other eBayers.

i only accept paypal payments too when selling but my comment was meant from a buyer's perspective. It is so easy right now from that aspect. I could be wrong on this but this Adyen sounds like its a newer version of Paypal that "specializes" in international payments. (this came from Google) I personally don't sell to buyers outside the US so i don't get why we should be forced to switch. Ebay thinks they're helping the sellers here,if they really wanted to help the sellers stop siding with the buyers like they do now. I can honestly say 99% of problems i've come across as a seller in the past year, have not been an issue with payment or currency, they've been from people trying to take advantage of the system ebay allows.

edit: it looks like Paypal payments are still gonna be an option so maybe its not gonna be to bad.

I think ebay is going after a smaller margin (profit) from sellers in hopes to derive more sellers & more supply....this is great for buyers and ebay will be even more competitive vs. big auction house commissions especially for our niche in Sports Memorablila......... Paypal is going to continue to be a payment option for the next several years~its not going anywhere. Companies like Amazon are forcing businesses to tighten up and grab more traffic..... its a traffic grab, among other things, and the more goods for sale on ebay the bigger the draw and better pricing is a cornerstone to that. Ebay wants more monthly active users just like every other site .... and profit will result domestically and abroad. There are many other aspects to this transition as well.

Think about it in terms of how you pay on Amazon. You have all your credit cards set up in Amazon. You buy something and it's charged to any credit card you have registered. The credit card processing is either handled by an Amazon owned company or an outside processing company like Adyen. You never have to "leave" Amazon, and new Amazon users unlike Ebay users, aren't forced to sign up with PayPal in order to pay sellers. The new change will make paying on Ebay just like paying on Amazon. While this will in fact make it more convenient and seamless for Ebay users, you can also bet that their deal with Adyen is more profitable for Ebay than their deal with PayPal.

This will make it easier for buyers to use any payment method they want (i.e. not paypal only), sellers to get paid any way they want (i.e. not paypal only), and less fees for sellers.

    win all around for all.

Understood, but the buyer is at the mercy of what the seller decides to accept. This will essentially be like a built-in PayPal at eBay... and eBay will have access to all the transaction information. As far as the global aspect, Adyen was founded as a foreign company and has a more global footprint than PayPal... and that is not as much for selling to users in other countries as it is to cater to all of eBay's global websites (like ebay.ca, ebay.uk, ebay.it, etc.). Adyen is better equipped to handle all of those "other" currencies than PayPal. I believe Adyen's first big customer was Groupon.

As said in the email....details will follow as the transition date nears, but you can be 100% sure, ebay will make more money off it and will be easier for THEM, Whether it helps the sellers is TBD, but I can almost guarantee that the fees for accepting payment through ebay will not be less than what we are paying through paypal.

IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY
