1953 topps cards... reprints?

These seem extremely glossy any indications on if you walk think these are fakes or re-prints? Or were they just preserved that well? I mainly collect 60’s cards and not sure on the 50’s

I walk think they're reprints. Original 53 Topps cards aren't this glossy nor do they have borders this wide. Simply do an eBay search for 53 Topps psa 8 (or any grade) and I think you will see what I am talking about ;)

These appear to be from the 1991 release of the 1953 Topps Archives set. They should say Archives on the back side.

Just look on the back as stingray suggested and read towards the bottom.

These look reprinted though with the wide borders for sure.

  • Yeh, I bought a few packs around 1992. They are 1991 Topps Archives reprints, says it right on the back. Someone started a thread at another forum regarding these saying he believes he has cards worth $1,000 to $25,000 and how does he get hem graded without mailing them off.

I actively collect Kirby Puckett. I have collections of Michael Jordan, Emmitt Smith, Roberto Clemente, Dwight Gooden, Tom Seaver, Errict Rhett and Evan Longoria.

I have the 1953 Topps set, and a set of the 53 Reprints from 1991. There were 337 cards in the reprint set that not only looked different from the originals ( gloss and reprint statement), but were a different size ( standard size). There was also a promo set of 8 cards issued in advance of the full set release. Same as cards in the issued set except Pre Production Sample was stamped on back.

The 337 cards in the reprint set included 273 of the original 274 cards. Permission to use the image of Bill Loes could not be obtained, although cards with his name and card # 174 can be found on the backs of cards with a different player on the front. Topps added 50 plus players not in the original set. The B&W photos with colored backgrounds of the added cards turned some people off

More interesting, at least to me, was the 1973 "reprint" of 8 1953 style card in which 3 of the 8 players are misidentified, Purpose of the set is up for debate. They tend to be scarcer and more valuable....and
    mysterious

That's not Furillo. And that's not Rosen. That is Jackie and Satchel and Mize.

I'll say McCullough is the 3rd one misidentified.

Right Mr Peanut. McCullough is Vic Jancowicz, Rosen is Jim Fridley, and Furillo is Bill Antonello.
Some say the set was created as a table gift at a 20 year banquet to commemorate the set, but if so, how did Topps get 3 of 8 cards wrong. Was it a gag of some kind ?
