Revisit a coin with me?

She's long, long gone. But not forgotten.

Two years ago yesterday, I had an opportunity to go through an extensive collection of raw crowns. The collector had focused on the Middle East and Asia and everything close. Thousands of pieces. From that collection, I pulled 20 or 30 (or 40, maybe 50 ;) ) coins that I felt were exceptional. From that small group, I submitted about a dozen across the street.

One coin in particular I had hesitated to buy because it didn't look right. It was earlier than most of the pieces in the collection. And it wasn't exactly a crown (though there were plenty of fractional pieces in that extensive mix). But this piece in particular just looked too perfect. Surely it was a fantasy piece or a restrike of some kind. But it wasn't terribly expensive, and I knew if I didn't take it, I'd regret it. So it came home with me. Doubting my intuition, I decided the best thing to do would be send it in to see if maybe I'd lucked out.

And this is what came back to me:

The 1862 C (Calcutta) Rupee
S&W -4.51 Type F/7, 0/0
Crescent and V
NGC MS65

This piece had a mintage in the hundreds of millions. When this came back, it was only the 4th piece to grade 65 with none higher. That population stands today, nearly 2 years later.

I sometimes wonder if NGC or our hosts could have removed the carbon spot on the reverse at 9:00. And if so, would that make this the lone 66.

I sold it, after wild negotiations, to an Indian collector on eBay in April of 2016.

You have to wonder if that stayed in a wrapped roll for a very long time - the blast white surfaces with a hint of toning around the periphery - a gorgeous coin.
