In the Keith Jackson thread, Justacommem noted that the sportscaster coined "The Big House" as a handle for Michigan Stadium.
Mark will of course recall that the now demolished Olympia Stadium was called "The Old Red Barn." The Silverdome was originally named Pontiac Metropolitan Stadium (That lasted about two weeks.
Sort of a half nickname, Longtime TV newsman Bill Bonds called the Joe Louis Arena, "The Joe," and it stuck.
Don't recall that Tiger Stadium has an alternate moniker, but radio God Ernie Harwell would say "come on out to the corner of Michigan and Trumbull...plenty of good seats still available."
What were the nicknames in your town?
