Murray and Smith sighting in second row; now time to rip these two rows.

Here's a sampling of the first row of packs (except the jackson pack). IMO, pretty blah. Lots of uncentered cards.
A few HOF'er cards, but nothing perfect, so those don't make the cut.

Now this is a little wierd. I've paused opening any further packs because it appears over half the packs have a HOF on the top or bottom:
I don't know where to put this in the world of unopened '81 cellos. In this box we have:
Reggie jackson on top
Nolan Ryan on top
Eddie Murray on top
Mike Schmidt on bottom
George Brett on bottom (twice)
Kirk Gibson on top
Pete Rose RB on top
Johnn Bench on top
Rod Carew on top and Yount on back (same pack
Ozzie Smith RB on top
Harold Baines on bottom
Steve Carlton on bottom
And this is not FASC, but it is BBCE sealed. go figure

I've opened up the packs that didn't have a HOF on them. In terms of finding graded cards (9/10's), this box sucks. Many cards were OC; either a little left, or a little right, or top, or bottom. When the T/B was centered, the R/L was off. When the R/L was centered, the T/B was off. When the R/T were centered, the L/B were off. One after another. Now these are nice cards, as many would grade 7/8, but they're not making the cut for our raw binder.
Of the +/- 300 cards I've openeed, about 4-7 cards would be gradable. Not a good percentage. Since we don't submit cards for grading, we'll consider these cards 10's in our raw book.

Lots of star power in that box! Looks like it was a box that was put together with star packs but not designated as such on the label. Very nice!

Looking forward to the 83's! Grote would know this, but were the 81's wrapped so tight that they dinged the corners? I know by 1983 they went with a looser wrap.
Good luck on the 83 Box!

Great question. In this box I received (3) cello packs that were tightly wrapped, the rest were the loosely wrapped variety cello packs. Keep in mind this was not FASC box, so not sure if this is standard or some sort of Frankenstien.
The one on the left is a loose wrapped cello pack and the one on the right is very tight. You can see the font is slightly smaller on the tightly wrapped pack.
You can't even see the gum from the top the pack it's so thight (loose pack on top). And you can assume the corners of the cards are compromised.
Here you can see the gums is wrapped so tight it's bending the cards. Loose wrapped on right.
The cards from those tight cellos were mostly OC, so they didn't make it to my card lab for analysis on the corners/print. But you can assume the corners were probably dinged on the first couple and last couple of cards.
I have never bought cello boxes or cases, FASC or otherwise, prior to '81, because I understood that is the year tight packs were phased out. Since I may some day rip the boxes, I can't take the risk on those tight packs prior to '81. I received very sage cello advice from two board members here whom everyone knows, prior to my diving into unopened. I was told there is some loosely wrapped cello boxes prior to '81, but I do not know how you tell the difference when you buy the cello box.
There was a '79 cello case being tossed around on the auction houses over the past year. I think it sold two or three times. For unopened collectors, it's probably a nice case to own. For rippers, it's probably a bad investment, IMHO.

1981 Topps baseball cellos came both loosely wrapped and tightly wrapped. Topps produced both versions from 1980 through 1982 before switching solely to loosely wrapped in 1983. A sealed case will consist of one or the other version.

So can we assume prior to '80 all cellos were tightly wrapped?

Yes, though the clear wrapped jumbo cellos (1970-1972) with the outer box were a bit more loosely wrapped than those with Topps graphics printed directly on the wrapper (1973 forward).
