The 1928B $2 replacement note remains the King of Small-Sized $2 United States Notes.

    Sold $19,200
    Est: $20,000-$30,000
    Lot Description
Tied Finest Known 1928E $2 Replacement

Fr. 1506*. 1928E $2 Legal Tender Star Note. PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ.

Although roughly identical to the massless hoard of Series of 1928 $2 Legal Tender Notes, this example is in actuality something truly special. Bearing the engraved signatures of Treasurer William Alexander Julian and Treasury Secretary Fred M. Vinson this combination represents one of the shortest-lived signature combinations of the Twentieth Century. Serving together from July 23, 1945 to June 23, 1946, this signature combination would come to an end following Vinson's elevation to the position of Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court by President Truman and the elevation of John Wesley Snyder to the position of Treasury Secretary upon confirmation by the United States Senate. Adding the desirability of a scarce replacement issue and an exceptional state of preservation that is without a doubt superior to example pedigreed to The Gregory Collection last year on account of the frame-like centering of the present example accentuated by bright paper and bold crimson overprints situated against the boldly engraved details. A treat indeed, and one that will attract spirited bidding from the host of star note collectors and small-size specialists.

    PMG Pop 3/None Finer.

    Estimate: $20,000 - $30,000.
