I have an 82, but I’ve never shipped an empty box. Maybe there’s a way to flatten it out to ship? I’m willing to let it go.
The boxes are designed so they can be flattened fairly easily

You mean by separating the glued tabs? Doesn't that compromise the box's condition severely?
There is no need to separate the glued tabs. The four tabs are only glued on one half of the tab. The other half can be gently worked down so that the box will flatten out. That is the reason for the diagonal preforations/creases at all four corners of the boxes

Can the box be returned to normal with no lasting effect?
Yes.
