Rare Hungarian Double Talers

As I am highly vested in the Holy Roman Empire series, I have learned that the multiple Talers from the Hungarian side (Kremnitz Mint) of the empire, are seldom found. I bought a Rudolph II 2 Taler piece a while back and recently came across a Leopold I (The Hogmouth) double taler, in repaired yet genuine condition. I gave this purchase much thought given the condition yet concluded that given the significant scarcity relative to price, I should pursue.

For both of these, there were no auction comparables whatsoever and for the Rudolph the auction stated it as the only piece held in private hands (mine I guess). I wonder how many were made in total. Both pieces are struck in a similar diameter to that of a single Taler only double the thickness.

    @Zohar

    Both are very handsome. Congratulations. Please bring both to NYINC. I’d like to see the Rudy again.

    One question: please cite the auction record for the Rudy. I’m guessing it’s Kuenker?

    Very nice, and quite impressive!

    For my own edification, would you mind pointing out which part is repaired on the Leopold coin? Also, I noticed that the completed auction listing for the Rudolph coin has the lot as unsold - did you buy it from a different source or were you able to negotiate with them after the sale? Hope this doesn't come off as too nosy - just trying to learn more about the marketplace and what to keep an eye out for on pieces.

    @Iosephus,

    Zohar and I spoke ad nauseam about the Leo and we cannot figure out the damage. Thus, it was hard for me to advise him on how to proceed. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t have it in hand yet.

    As for the Rudy, I’ll let Zohar respond.

    Leopold from inspection its the area around the bust.!

    Rudolph hammered raw on Fruhwald for 13,500 Euro, slabbed at our hosts and then listed at higher starting price as per above on Gorny and went unsold. It was then placed on the January 2017 Platinum Night NY International Auction with Heritage which is where I bought it. The technical grade didn't really mesh with the stellar material and it somewhat slipped my screening as I assumed due to size that it is a single taler. An hour prior to the live auction, I returned to lot viewing and decided to go for it. Remember chatting with EVP prior to bid where we were thinking going double the realized figure.

    Good strategic additions Zohar. I doubt you will see another opportunity on either one for awhile, especially the second.
