First Registry Set Complete - 1951 Topps Ringside Boxing - Next Up: 1986 Fleer Basketball PSA 10

Took about three years to complete and the last card, #95 Gene Tunney, took four months to find. I put in a nuke snipe on a PSA 4 just to finish the set and got outbid. Luckily, I was able to get a PSA 6 for even less with nice centering. I'd love to get #1 on the registry eventually, but that looks like a fantasy wrapped in a dream. Out of the 96 cards, I have 18 with zero pop higher and quite a few cards that are PSA 6 or less. Over time, I'd like to upgrade those to 7s. For now, I am going to focus on my 1986 Fleer Basketball PSA 10 set. Biggest card left I need is the Moore.

Biggest lesson learned? The Registry is no joke and people trying to complete the same sets will make you pay for upgrades.

Congratulations. That is a tough set. Years ago I tried to do a raw set. I was up to 60 or 70 cards before breaking it up. I still have a couple cards here somewhere.

    Awesome!

The good news for you is you didn't buy the Moore a few years ago!

Congrats Joe. That is a big time set to complete as is the next one on your list. I have completed two sets: 1961 and 1986 Fleer BK. My 1986 set was all PSA 9 though. I can't imagine trying to get some of the cards you will need to get in 10 for that set. Good luck and I look forward to living vicariously through you on the PSA 10 set!

Congrats and good luck with the 86 PSA 10 set. Look forward to following.

  • Thanks for the kind words everyone. I have such an appreciation for you baseball guys with 5,6 or 7 hundred cards in a set.

AWESOME accomplishment! Didn't know you collected other than basketball. How many do you have in PSA 10 from the '86 set? Do u have the Jordan already?

    STAY HEALTHY!

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

    Hey Doug,

Thanks for the kind words. This set is quite the oddity for me to collect, but I love the card art and researching the stories of the fighters. It also helped that my sick (now deceased) grandfather fought one of the guys in the set (Jimmy Flood) in grammar school.

As far as the 86-87 Fleer set, I am at 59.85% complete (79/132). I have the Jordan and most of the other keys, except the Moore as mentioned, and the #1 Jabbar.

The true test will be completing the 86-87 Fleer Sticker set. I have the Jordan in that as well, but the Jabbar alone can approach $20k at auction. May need to bypass that set lol

Congrats! I'm working on the 86 Fleer Set in 9 / 10 myself. Subbing many of my own as I find them raw, so it's been challenging, but tons of fun! Good Luck.

I wish I had the patience for that! Sounds like so much fun though. I subbed in a few autographed Ringside cards I found on Ebay just to add to the set.
