Help Grade my 1962 Topps Baseball Cards

secretstashsecretstash Posts: 1,396 ✭✭✭✭

Picked up these 62s recently. Wanted to share some of them for opinions. I have never subbed 62s but I know they are very tough cards. They seem to be okay up against other cards, but I have to ask if these appear to be trimmed or anything nefarious?

What am I looking at here grade wise? The two cards that have the other tone of another card slightly on them (banks and bob's pupil's), how does that affect the grade?

Thanks.

Are any of these centered enough for the ".5" (minus maris) or should I prepare for the grader of death throughout this entire set? I am thrown off determining if centering is a leader or edges with little to no chipping.

Here is my opinion on these sets (1962,1971,1975) with colored borders. PSA's guidelines refer to "slight fraying" of corners. But what that means is in the eye of the beholder. I have submitted '71s that look incredible to me, but get 7s because any hint of whiteness at a corner is viewed as "fraying." Yet I see older flip cards graded 8 with actual dings at a corner. The guidelines can be enforced loosely or incredibly tightly. These days, it seems more common that it is tight, but there just isn't any way to quantify "fraying" that is 100% consistent, so I don't submit commons from these sets anymore as it is too risky for me.

Nice cards. Just having the #18 Managers Dream for the most part centered is a win, that is a tough card. I'm terrible at guessing grades but good luck. Doug

Love the 62 set. Those are beauties! I'd keep them raw myself.

    Thanks guys.

I think I will grade them all in the next bulk order. The only one I am unsure of is Maris due to the oc, but I think if I can squeeze a 6 out of it then it's much better in a holder than raw.

Figured I'd share the other 2 I have that I will send with the above.

Really nice cards 62's are so hard to grade but I think you will do well overall. Good luck with the grader.

Wow! Nice card. Well centered, really nice edges for a 62. Perhaps the surface held it back or you got TGOD.

I think the Killebrew is a wonderfully presenting 7. From the scan it absolutely appears to be worthy of a higher grade; could be TGOD or, possibly it's the slightest of snow/surface scuffing. Not that I would agree that it is a noticeable detriment, but without seeing the back, hard to see much else holding the card back from a better numerical grade.

I agree. I would buy that Killabrew for sure. Relatively sharp and centered pretty nicely for the series. If PSA won't give it the .5 due to the print dots and snow, then I think they should seriously consider a full 8. I believe that sometimes this scenario is more possible than a ".5" because it is in many ways like finding Big Foot...

I say 8, 8, 7, 6, 5 on the first batch. 7 and 8 on the last two. Measure them up with a modern card to check for minimum size.

The Killebrew has a shot at an 8 but you'll need to get the right grader due to the surface snow. It's not that bad, so that's why an 8 isn't out of the question.

Thanks for the nice comments on the Killebrew card! I figured 8.5, you can't really see the snow with the naked eye, I didn't notice the print dots before.

Surface is beautiful. Even with print dots card HAS to be minimum an 8.

Check out the price difference between a 7 and an 8 on this card.........WOW!

These grades are more how I was thinking. The first person saw it with a harsher eye and that is okay. I don't have a great scanner so it could be the scanner or the cards. I have never submitted 62s so I have no idea what I am in for. I appreciate the help everyone.
