Return of the Tiger

galaxy27galaxy27 Posts: 7,894 ✭✭✭✭✭

Teeing it up on Thursday morning with JT, who is arguably the longest hitter of the golf ball in the universe, pound-for-pound. (Probably 150 lbs soaking wet & averaged 310 off the tee in 2017.) Word has it that Tiger was blowing his drives past Patrick Reed in a practice round yesterday, so this should be mighty interesting.

Hope he fares well.

It would be great for golf if he did

Love Tiger but I just don't think he has the discipline not to do something that hurts his back. Whether it is hitting a shot with a dubious lie, trying to make something happen from an awkward position or just playing an event where the weather is not conducive to keeping his back healthy.

I would like to say I was excited about Tiger's return but we have heard this story multiple times from him. He is never fully truthful with the media so I expect a few more wins on his resume and then another injury. Hoping I am wrong as he made golf fun to watch in a way that the current stars just can't match.

He was also keeping up with DJ on drives last week. I'm expecting a mediocre performance this week as he's tuning in his distances and putting, but the drives I've seen have been incredible. Seems like he went back to his more natural swing, just with a little less backswing and faster explosion. I hope his back survives it.

I've said it for years, he needs to get his female game back on point to start winning again.

Merely stating the obvious here. Given his health history, more so than other golfers, he will always be one swing away from another injury. I wish him well on the courses.

I hope he puts a few good rounds together in a tourney. Would be so fun if he could get competitive at some tourneys. I am rooting for him.

Docs are way better at knees than they are with backs. They have mangled his three times and probably 4.

In any team sport,Tiger would have been Eli Manning'd a few years ago and offered a spot in management.

The old guy is toast. He doesn't know anything else so let him make a fool of himself.

You might be right but golf would sure be more fun if Tiger could make a couple of runs so I hope you are wrong. Imagine a major with Tiger in contention on a Sunday!? That would be fun.

I caught a bit of his round yesterday, could have been a lot better (straightening out some wild approaches) or a lot worse (quite a few 6+ ft par saves). Overall, he looked pretty good for his first round back.

If there's a way to shoot a disappointing 68, Tiger did it today.

Before we go crazy talking about how great he is doing, this is a perfect place for him to do well one time. This is basically tiger stepping into the ring with a tomato can.

So far not really any different than the last time he teed it up at the Hero World Challenge. His health is the key. If he stays healthy he will again be the top player in the world. Personally I don't think there is any chance he stays healthy but hopefully he proves me wrong.

-3 through first 4, -5 making the turn, -6 after 11, & then played the last 7 holes at +2. He had the makings of an incredible round going.

    Turn out the lights
    The party's over
    They say that
    All good things must end
    Call it tonight
    The party's over
    And tomorrow starts
    The same old thing again

    But the crazy crazy party
    Never seen so many people
    Laughing dancing
Look at you you're having fun
    But look at me
    I'm almost cryin'
That don't keep her love from dyin'
Misery cause for me the party's over
    Turn out the lights...

Once I had a love undyin'
    I didn't keep it but I tried
Life for me was just one party
    And then another
I broke her heart so many times
I had to have my parting wife
I had to have my party
Why broke her heart so many times
    But one day she said
    Sweetheart the party's over
    Turn out the lights...

was waiting to see what would happen when TW faced some real adversity. fugly front nine, under par on the back. difficult scoring day (avg was ~73), so all in all, 75 isn't ghastly.

btw i think i have that song on my ipod shuffle

Problem is their is no room for a run with the pack Tiger. He is either competitive and playing top ten golf each week or he is a fail.

The bar he set over a decade ago is now his curse.

Good news is he will be senior tour eligible in 8 years.

I hope you're right, because if Tiger is there all the better golfers mostly get ignored. I never did like him, but I certainly understood why PGA coverage was all Tiger all the time when he was the greatest golfer in the world. Now that he's not even close to that, the cameras should be focused on DJ, Jordan, Justin, etc. But I know it's going to remain all Tiger all the time until he goes away, so I hope he goes away soon.

i get that you guys harbor disdain for Tiger. i was there myself. but i love the actual sport so much that i was willing to set aside his proven doucheness and welcome his game back with open arms. more than anything, i want to see even an 80% Tiger lock horns with these young guns. if he becomes even remotely relevant again, the game of golf will end up in the thermosphere.

as for what's going on in this tournament, let's examine things realistically. the guy didn't play a competitive round of golf for 10 months and had his back carved up by a knife for the fourth time along the way. Glicker i assume you play, so i'm going to try my hardest not to lol when you say that it's win/contend or bust. taking everything that has happened to him into consideration -- self-inflicted or not -- you should know better. and this is not me holding the guy's onions because he's my fav player. if i was doing that, i'd be cupping Jordan's. this is strictly a good-for-golf thing.

as i peruse the leaderboard heading into the final round, i see Tiger ahead of 7 golfers:

    Justin Thomas (#3 & a major winner)
    Alex Noren (#17)
    Dustin Johnson (#1 & a major winner)
    Kevin Kisner (#25)
    Daniel Berger (#28)
    Henrik Stenson (#8 & a major winner)
    Brooks Koepka (#7 & a major winner)

i really don't care if TW shoots 80 today and finishes DFL. the mere fact that he has a) shown glimpses and b) is ahead of the aforementioned names after 54 holes speaks volumes. and if we're going to poo-poo this by dishing out indictments, they should be directed toward their games, not his. what, you're considered to be among the best in the world but can't distance yourself from an "old" guy with a bad back who hasn't played a legit round in almost a year? really, JT, DJ et al.?

Tiger did pretty well for being all chopped up and approaching the twilight years of most competitive golfers. The game though will not accept that. In a sport where a guy can finish no better than tenth for a season and still earn a small fortune, Tiger will not be accepted for that kind of performance.

He was given a pass on his returns, but as the season progresses, every tournament that he does not compete with the leaders will be seen as a fail. The spotlight will shine too brightly in his face and he will fold.

Some of that is his own doing, some of it is not.

  • galaxy27galaxy27 Posts: 7,894 ✭✭✭✭✭

you could not be more incorrect. the game is waiting with bated breath to accept anything Tiger gives. if he is healthy come April and tees it up at Augusta, it may very well be the most anticipated tourney since i've been alive. ratings will be obliterated.

i say this is going to be the most compelling tour season in recent memory. i say there are going to be some surprises in store for you. i say you'll be watching them when they happen. and i say you'll enjoy the hell out of them when they do. B)

Top 10 finish in his first tourney back and it's a disappointment!? Most golfers would be perfectly happy with that. A bad round Saturday and a bad back 9 today but overall nice showing. He still has some game in him.

He got smoked by ten strokes. He used to smoke the opposition by a dozen on a good weekend. If this were a real tourney with 72 making the cut, he finishes 30th or so.

Tell me, what can 42 year old Tiger do to close the gap?

First tourney back. My gosh. Give the guy a chance.

I look at Pat Perez as a good role model (so to speak). That guy has had an amazing career revitalization the last year and he's about the same age as Tiger with half the game that Tiger had. If Pat Perez can win a few tournies no reason Tiger can't. I am not saying he's going to win every major but he can win a couple low level tournies and maybe be competitive in a major. Again, this was his first tourney back.

  • galaxy27galaxy27 Posts: 7,894 ✭✭✭✭✭

larry, if Tiger can't lap the world's best after a 10-month layoff and fourth back surgery, he needs to put his sticks up until 12/30/2025.

what part of that do you find unreasonable?

The gridiron action has tainted logical thought. This is not baseball where you need to adjust to a 98 MPH fastball in Spring training or football where a chopblock can end your career, it is golf. Tighteners not needed. I assume that Woods has worked on his game extensively and if smart played several rounds on the host course. This is it. 3 pretty decent rounds and one scrub round. Never win a Masters with that type of performance, let alone the Dubai Open.

Go to Branson if you want to see over the hill crooners squeak out a last weak note. The PGA wants a side show, so be it. The game is loaded with stars, guys that have won Major events in the last decade. as DA noted...throw the spotlight on them.
