1952 Topps baseball low # Red Back "D.M." printed on the back? - SOLVED

Back to collecting again and I recently bought quite a few 1952 Topps baseball cards. Mostly graded ones.
One ungraded card is quite odd. A low number, first series Red Back, has "D.M." printed in black underneath the red print of "RECORD". It appears the "D.M." was on the cardboard before the red printing. Has anybody heard of or seen such a thing?
Thank you for your help.
Cheers!

    That's quite interesting.

I remember Mr Mint telling a story in one of his books where he bought an entire 53T set - raw - only to find out after he flipped it that it had the "stamped" initials of the previous owner.

Unfortunately, that relegates the card to an MK, I believe.

I'm going to guess that's what's going on here?

    Mike,
Thank you for the Mr. Mint story. I'll have to look that one up. It's always good to learn more, especially diving into the early 50's cards.
The difference with that '53 comparison is that it appears to be a "D.M." stamped behind the red printing, not on top. Kind of reminds me of the "My Cousin Vinny" quote: Vinny: "Let me ask a question, how do you get mud into the tires?"

    DJJazzBass,
You might want to post over the net54 card forum. I remember a post regarding a stamp on the back of a 52 card. Not sure if I can find it but if I do I will let you know. I'm pretty sure if you post over there you will get some feedback. Good luck.

The DM looks on top to me

    Topps Baseball-1948, 1951 to 2017
    Bowman Baseball -1948-1955
    Fleer Baseball-1923, 1959-2007

DM looks under to me also, maybe the company that supplied the paper? Or just an employee testing a stamper on a sheet before it was printed.

It's over red ink. Someone stamped their initials on it which was common when trading cards.

Thank you all for taking the time to look and comment. I just did a hi-res scan. Still looks behind the red to me.
The red print is easy to see the cardboard specs and lines through it. The "D.M." black is tough to see the cardboard colors behind it. If the black was on top, I don't think the red wouldn't be as bright as it is. Especially for the "D" in Record. That one really looks on top. No matter what, this is fun!
It's also odd why the dots are so big and high up from the base of the letters.

I'm going to guess it was stamped after, and the stamp ink didn't adhere to the red ink as well as it absorbed into the plain cardboard... giving it that appearance. But interesting nonetheless.

I think it was stamped on top as well. Here's why - if you look at the black ink that is on the red lettering, especially on the O and D, it is darker and in splotches. This seems to indicate, as bas noted, that the ink didn't adhere to the red ink well, and instead pooled up in places causing the darker areas around the O and D.

That's my opinion, anyway, but a cool discussion either way.

    could be dale murphy's?

but that still leaves a unsolved mystery...

    is it this one's:

    or this one's:

I'm still not sure about the printing on this card, but even if the "D.M." is stamped on top, I would assume that D.M. owned more than 1 baseball card. Perhaps I should find more and start a 1952 D.M. collection. B)

I'll have to figure out the best way to get a definitive answer about the card though.

Even more hi-res scan, but it came out a little blurry.

Since I collect ungraded sets I personally think stuff like gum stains and back stamps add character to cards. I like them

    Topps Baseball-1948, 1951 to 2017
    Bowman Baseball -1948-1955

Thank you very much for finding and posting that. Very educational.
So if most likely the DM is a stamp on my card, then I should be able to buy a lot of DM cards very cheap and go for a set. ;)
If anyone else has a stamped initials on a 1952 card, please post. It would be great to compare the scans.

Mystery solved! Thank you very much! Cheers!
I guess D.M. had lots of cards for his ink stamper. I should have searched PSA MK. Something to look out for in raw cards for sure. D.M. has made a collection of really nice baseball cards much more affordable.

I had found some 52s with back stamp containing a person's name and address on a handful of cards. I researched, and was able to find the son of the owner! When I contacted them, they couldn't have cared less. They mentioned yes it was his dad, and he got rid of most of his stuff when he passed away. I wish I could find something else that belong to my Dad! There are some raw at least 52 topps cards with the DM stamp, I have seen a handful.

    talk about impeccable timing!

this thread has been going on for 10 days, but naturally ted chimes in saying he's seen a handful of these right after other examples are posted.

D.M. had an Ed Mathews. Just showed up on ebay. Probably a Mantle out there somewhere too.
