Found this 1873 PCGS Trade Dollar on Ebay. It says it is a proof. But, I thought all the 1873 proofs had a distinctive die crack.

AFAIK, not all proofs have this marker.
I thought the die crack was just above the date. But then that's just from memory.

It is actually a die scratch. I stand corrected.

It's a die gouge going thru the skirt,
not a die crack.

that looks like a tool mark into the die instead of a die crack.
I know nothing about proof trade dollars, but it could have happened anytime during the life of the die. I'd not assume all proof 1873 trade's have it unless research exists that proves such.
The gouge is there on the rattler coin.
I guess your eyes are better than mine. I cannot see it.

It is very hard to see. did you blow up the image? That's how I saw it.
Now, perhaps you may wish to remove the "disagree" you gave @afford when he corrected your post.
No I do not see it at all. But, yes will remove disagree.

Man he is asking way too much for that coin. He wants $500 more than MS63's are selling for.

I'm sorry I don't know about computers but I copied the original slab to Word, cropped it and enlarged the area with the die line and it became very visible. When I tried to move the image to this thread I could not. I'm sure it is very easy and hopefully a member will do it.
HELP!
Still trying to figure it out.
"When I tried to move the image to this thread I could not."
1. save the image to your PC.
2. open a post and click the * at upper right, then click the little "EDIT" icon.
3. put your cursor in the post where you want the image to appear.
4. click the little picture icon just above the post.
5. a browse link will open. Click "BROWSE" and select your image. Press "OPEN"
6. your photo will be inserted into the editing post wherever you placed the cursor.
7. click "Post Comment" to complete.
I forgot --- click your heels three times, turn around clockwise four times and hope you're not in Kansas.
I don’t believe that all proofs have the line - I have seen certified examples without it
I did it!! Sort of if you can figure out how to open this. Then look for the line.
I can see it plain as day, even with the eBay images.

Not all 73 proofs have it but all coins that have it are proofs. An expensive holder premium for a dark coin there, I would only hope it lights up beautifully under a light to be worth close to that.

Double clicking the link will open the *.docx file and the photo. If you save the photo directly to your PC - as an image such as JPG, or TIF, it will then appear as an image in the post.
(To get the photo out of your .docx file, do this:
1. right click the image.
2. click "Save as Picture"
3. Give it a name and paste the photo into a folder or onto the desktop.)
Here's the result:

And that link would be...? I'm going to guess that "Bruce" is TDN - right? Looks like a place everyone should have in "favorites."
EDIT: Thanks Wabbit, I typed this in Google and it came up first: Bruce's trade dollar website.
Oh Lord it's nice to be famous, and help collectors all day,.. What is TDN's name?
If you are bored and want to look at the HA sold examples, here they are. A random couple of clicks showed the die line on them.

The die gouge is there.
Lance.
Yep it is. Now I see it. Thanks for doing that.

But not on this one.

Also, there is a squarish die "chip" in the ribbon, just to the left of Liberty's extended index finger, on the proofs with the linear die gouge. But, not on the example I cite above.
