Guide for breakdown of manufacturers?

Is there some sort of guide that lists the manufacturers on a timeline or something similar?

Like if i wanted to buy some pre-war baseball cards what companies should I be searching for etc... when did one company shut its doors? What modern manufacturers are now around etc.

I have done some cursory googling but haven't found anything consolidated.
