Fresh Ripped cards from 78-83; opinions please

I'll move this over to BST but I'd like to get some opinions first.

I'm ripping wax packs, boxes, cellos and rack packs to build ultra high end raw sets from '78-'83; all boxes/packs bought from BBCE. During the process, I of course have lots of cards I'm not using. These are some really nice fresh cards that I've accumulated that I don't need, there just not 10's, which is what I'm looking for in my raw sets.

For example, in one wax box I might only keep +/- 30 cards. In one rack pack I might only keep +/- 5 cards.

For 1983, I've ripped so much that I'm now discarding cards that could grade as 10's because I already have 2 dead centered cards of that player.

I pay no attention to rookies/HOF's in terms of keeping the cards. If it's not dead centered, it goes in the discard pile.

Today, my '83 discard pile is about 2500 cards deep which includes about +/- 4 each of Gwynn/Sandburg/Boggs/Ripken. All fresh from packs. I've kept the boxes, wrappers, gum and BBCE label to add authenticity to how fresh these cards are. Here are some photos of the rip-feast:

Here's my question. should I build a few sets, or sell this as a lot? I know it's not a fortune, as shipping will be around $20, and If i keep ripping, $40.

Here's my guess on the grades for '83 lot:

1-2% 10's
5-10% 9's
40-60% 8's
15-20% 7's
2-3% below 7's.

98% of these cards have sharp corners. The only thing keeping them from 10's is centering.

For the other years, I have the same issue, but about half the amount of cards. However, I'm getting close to ripping some more boxes for those years.

Thanks in advance.

I can empathize with this scenario. Over the past 20+ years, I accumulated stacks of cards from 1970-1981 that I pulled from unopened packs. I decided to start putting together a high end raw set for each year I had enough cards to work with and sell the others in lots ranging from 100 to 1,000 cards. For 1978, for example, I'd put up a lot of 500 cards for $60 plus exact shipping. For 1975 minis, I'd list a lot of 500 cards for $150 plus shipping. If you have key rookies from any years, you might want to list those for sale separately. There are a lot of raw set collectors still out there. Good luck!

that makes a lot of sense Tim. Ripping early 70's must of been a riot. Can you imagine ripping those now for building raw sets.

It was a lot of fun, though back then prices were much lower than they are now. I rarely rip anything these days~the odds are so heavily stacked against you but every once in a while, I will crack open a 78 rack or a 75 mini wax pack to reclaim the thrill, lol..

I am a raw set collector and i would love to upgrade my 1980, and 1978 and 1975 mini sets with discarded fresh pack pulls....i don't need 9s or 10s.....would-be 7 or 8s are great for me.

  • I would be interested in a bulk lot. We are constantly building sets from 1970-1980s. PM me if you get to the point to sell.
