1852 General Winfield Scott Presidential Campaign Token, 28mm Diameter, “Silvered” Brass, PCGS MS-63 @ $ALE PENDING
Winfield Scott was the foremost American military leader in the first half of the 19th century, playing a prominent role in every major conflict from the War of 1812 to the Civil War. This token is unlisted as having been issued in silvered brass and researching is the only example I have encountered. PCGS agreed by adding Silvered on the slab label as strong trace remains are evident on both the obverse and reverse. The dies where cut by Hiram W. Hayden of Scovill Manufacturing in Waterbury, Connecticut. Hayden’s craft yielded one of the finest executed token designs within the Scott series, especially on a planchet so small in diameter. Possessing extreme fine details throughout from the obverse profile to the reverse which portrays the actual wounded scene. The silvering and lovely peripheral patina intensify the eye appeal adding a sort of technicolor life to the pictorial battle scene. With the obverse and reverse being somewhat high relief the arm and leg details of Scott lying wounded are always weakly struck on this variety as flat instead of rounded. Unfortunately the talents of die sinker Hiram W. Hayden where short lived as he was hired as an engineer at Scovill in 1851 not a die sinker. Hayden an inventor with 30 patents revolutionized how Scovill made brass tea kettles. In 1853 he had started his own company with some other former Scovill employees manufacturing daguerreotype photography plates and later brass oil lamps. Here’s your opportunity to own a unique piece which was missing from collections amassed by the likes of Brand, Raymond, Boyd, & Ford for no more than acquisition expenditure of a gem common dated Morgan dollar.
Complete set of three 1876 Anti Samuel J. Tilden Satirical Tildenopathy Presidential Campaign Tokens, 31mm Diameter, White Metal, PCGS MS62, 65, 66 @ $ALE PENDING
If you thought the 2016 Presidential Election was a mudslinging event it was nothing compared to the campaign of 1876 which shares many familiarities. Die sinker George Hampton Lovett of New York was commissioned by the Hayes campaign to strike these tokens which advised not to vote for Samuel J. Tilden. The jokes on these tokens no doubt sparked much laughter at Tilden's expense, but most of their meaning has eluded history. Tilden who was the Democrat Governor ran as a reform candidate against the corruption of the former Grant administration. The New York Tribune claimed that secret code cipher telegrams sent by Tilden's staff during the 1876 electoral offered bribes to election vote counters. Although Tilden was never found guilty of fraud his reputation suffered from the accusations. Nevertheless Tilden still received more than 50 percent of the popular vote but was not elected president by the Electoral College. Although very popular among collectors these satirical tokens where crudely struck for distribution at political rallies not aimed at the collector market. Most are usually encountered with wear from improper storage and abused from having been mishandled. Rarely encountered in uncirculated especially nearing gem problem free condition and when one surfaces it vanishes instantly. With PCGS moving from their infant, to toddler, now almost preschooler stage grading exonumia these are very conservatively graded Pop 1’s. The peripheral matte obverse SJT-1876-7 is always seen with rim issues as struck which might have held it back as no one would shrug seeing this a point or two higher. The SJT-1876-6 is by far the finest Tilden survivor in any metal type I have ever seen being fully proof like with deep cameo contrast. Since NGC grades politicals as PL & DMPL if submitted ATS it would be a strong MS67 DMPL contender. The offering here is a turn-key set of all three varieties issued in white metal in high grades comparable to and exceeding the quality of examples in the collections of Brand & Ford. All in all as you can see by the enclosed images grades aside this is a very pleasing matched trio.
