FSH: 1741-A French ecu of Louis XV (holed & tooled, but old, big, silver, & CHEAP! $19 delivered!)
Here's a pretty cool crown-sized silver piece that's 276 years old. It's not for you if you're finicky about problems or want an example to send off for slabbing, but it's a pretty interesting large silver coin (crown-sized, and slightly bigger than a US silver dollar, with more bullion content than a Morgan or Peace dollar).
It was struck in 1741 in Paris ("A" mintmark). It was holed for jewelry at some point, which is not all that unusual, but what is unusual is that someone tooled the date, apparently with a knife, carving the numerals inwards. And yet this long-dead mystery person was not attempting to alter the date. It's pretty apparent that it is actually a 1741 coin with "1741" recarved over the original date (same numerals). Why? We'll never know. Boredom, perhaps? Perhaps it was this person's birthyear and the date was a bit worn, so he "reinforced" it with a little carving? Possible.
It would make a cool coin for your keychain or hat or even your collection binder.
Anyway, who wants this one for $19 delivered to North American addresses? (If you're outside the USA I'll pay for the first $2 shipping and then the rest is on you.)
