PCGS has recently recognized the TYPE 1 and TYPE 2 varieties of these beautiful 100 franc gold pieces and the corresponding Proof Sets. These Proof Sets are the first gold coins of the Congo and the first to have a Congolese head of state in the design: President Joseph Kasa-Vubu

While It is challenging to find either proof set in original packaging, the TYPE 1 set (and 100 FRS.) is particularly elusive. Only observed ca. three Type 1 sets (OGP) in auctions over the last decade - all in Europe.
The Type 2 100 FRANCS with or without the other coins is more commonly found in U.S. auctions - rarely with OGP however.
"THE Congo's 1965 Gold 5-piece proof set, exists in two versions. The TYPE 1 set, anchored by the 100 Franc coin with the TYPE 1 reverse [100 FRS. (abbreviated)] was issued in packaging bearing French text. The TYPE 2 proof set was issued in a different style of packaging with text in English - SPINK made these (Type 2) available in London in late Fall 1965. The reverse of the TYPE 2 100 Franc coin displays "Franc" spelled out and is in a different position than the denomination placement on the TYPE 1 coin. The other 4 coins in both the TYPE 1 and TYPE 2 proof sets are identical {KM#2-5]. Many of these sets have been broken out into single coins and it is most common to find them in that manner in the marketplace.
