Bought a "REPRINT" 1979 Topps Gretzky RC. Is it REAL?? (I think so)

I could be foolish for thinking it is real, but I bought it as a reprint. I've compared this to my other Gretzky's and I don't see how it is a reprint. I have googled all the reprints I can find and I just cannot find any OC top to bottom and the right size, along with fish eyes, which I think all reprints would avoid normally.

I don't think it will grade high anyway, but for $20 it would be a steal. Any thoughts are welcome.

Looks good to me. Nice score if that's the case!

I'm not sure, but the corner wear adds a little legitimacy(?) to it. I would of taken a shot at it for $20.

I think it's real. The fish eye is a good sign you do not see those on fake cards.

Thanks guys. I am going to send it in because I think it is real, and I wanted some additional confirmation. I bought it as a $20 reprint so I either overpaid for a worn reprint or I got a nice score with an informed risk, I think the latter!

The fish eyes are what did it for me when I pulled trigger. I just couldn't imagine they would use those in the reprint and have OC and corner wear. I guess I was sold if it ends up being a reprint.

Yes fish eyes are actually called hickeys in the printing business. They happen when a small glob of ink sticks to the printing plate. Most fake cards are printed on a cheep home computer making fish eyes impossible.

    Nice score

Was the Topps rookie even faked initially?

    If it comes back a straight "4" it's a $200.00 card!

Best of luck and let us know the result.

That does appear to be a real one. The fish-eye and centering (or lack of) would lead me to think it's authentic. Well done!

Why was it being sold as a reprint when you bought it?

He is a coins guy, not cards, and someone told him it was a reprint so he sold it as one to not make false claims about authenticity. I was pretty sure it was real, but I could have been overpaying for a reprint. I think it was just pure luck to find it with someone previously claiming it was the reprint version. Then again, I've never scanned the reprints for countless hours to see if they are out there. lol
