The 78 rack with Ryan, Murray and Munson on top is all wrong.

Thanks for the post, 1neatstuff. When there are 3 stars or rookies on top it always
sends up red flags. Usually too good to be true.

Tim, the same seller has a 77 rack with 3 stars on top also. Probably bogus also?

your welcome darin i collect alot of unopened and i just hate seeing people get burned by this crap i know tim and cpamike and a few of the others guys on here know alot more about placement of the cards also...there also seems to be someone making up fake 1978 blisters packs with stars on top in 100 count blisters and
those are also junk and not put out by topps that way...and that second rack is also 100% bad....

He just put up another rack pack.

1978 with Nolan Ryan, Jack Morris rookie, and George Brett on top.

These would be some awesome racks, but yes totally faked and should be avoided. Another example of the importance of being educated... Or knowing Tim!

Cards are incorrect in that rack, as well as the other 78 rack, too.

    LOL, Doug!!

Looks like all 3 racks have been pulled down by the seller. Will be interesting to see if they resurface or if some poor soul made a deal off ebay.

Also just noticed this feedback left for the seller:

Quick Payment, Great buyer, Nice person to deal with. "Thanks" vickeys*collectibles ( 89Blue star icon for feedback score in between 50 to 99) During past month

Even more reason why we need a rack pack Grading service as this is crazy. I know the holders are pricey and shipping racks in general is not easy. BBCE has a good service, nice holder. Volume is the question I suppose and Grading something BBCE does not do. Is there enough volume and demand out there for this to work? Why hasn't it already?

Without researching, I'm less likely to believe the 82 is fake with the Ryan cell upside down and no key rookies showing. Resealers typically won't do something like that, even though it's possible on legit racks.

I don't know the implied panels outside of Ripken and Lee smith for 1982 but I think that rack looks decent if you're interested in buying.

There's a grotesque 75 rack on ebay right now with Yount & Ryan on top (both incorrectly located).

I should ask him if he can make me one with Gibson on top. ;)

It is unless you know what you are dealing with or know somebody else that does. Thankfully people like Tim, and others, are willing to share their knowledge to help prevent a bunch of these frauds from being passed along.

Same boat for me. I was a pack collector before PSA graded them and got burned. Once PSA packs hit, I got back in. Fooled twice.

Unless it’s a factory sealed case, authenticated by BBCE, or a box from a case that the exhumed, then I don’t bother anymore. Just too much uncertainty to make it worthwhile to me.

Unopened is a beast of its own, definitely not for the light of heart. But there is plenty of good material out there. You do have to establish relationships to truly learn to trust some sellers, but there are a few that you can absolutely trust. I recently picked up two iconic wax packs for dirt cheap... and from a long time dealer who I have done tons of business with, they'll be going to PSA for a valued third opinion.

Besides the obvious BBCE and Fritsch, I've established relationships with the former owners of Marchant Cards and Pritchyk Cards, which are both still selling inventory. I bought a case fresh wax box of 79 Topps from ebay seller D.King earlier this year for $500. Zippys_hoard_33 had great unopened product for a while. Bought a partial wax box of 80/81 Topps basketball late last year from a former dealer (was buffalobraves on eBay) that I ended up pulling a PSA 9 Bird/Magic along with a PSA 9 and PSA 10 wax pack. And few years ago bought several case fresh 78 vending boxes for a very good price (~$450) from a former dealer in Seattle (99noah99 on eBay). There's definitely deals out there.

Hiya Brad - why would someone sell a wax box way below market value? I don't understand.

My guess is they didn't know true market value... or maybe they only look at previous sales on non-BBCE wrapped boxes, or maybe they just had way less into than what they were selling it for. This seller in particular has way more entertainment memorabilia than sports cards, so that may be part of it as well. They sold four boxes within just a week or two, each time it was listed $50 higher than the previous sale... I was fortunate enough to get the last one they had (sales from Worthpoint):

I did double check and it looks like I paid $600 but used some leftover eBay Bucks I had. But I'd vouch for them and I'd bet the 1981 box they currently have up for sale is totally legit, although at a far less "discount".

Their packs are definitely good, not sure what kind of offer you can get them to agree on... but definitely good packs.
