New cards with recent cert# but in old label holder??

Not sure why, but I keep coming across cards on eBay, namely some recent Topps Chrome Aaron Judge cards, with the most recent cert numbers but in the older style holder. I’ve seen lower recent cert numbers in the new lighthouse label and numbers chronologically after that number but in the old flip. Any reason why psa did this? Are they trying to finish off old holder stock? Just makes me suspicious seeing them.

When PSA first did the new holders, I had a 30 card review being done and several cards got bumped up which was nice, but they put them into old holders. Meanwhile I had gotten an order back 3 days earlier on a different service with the new ones, go figure.
i just noticed a card up for sale on ebay, cert # beginning with 281XXXXXX. I just got my cards back from PSA last week (subbed in mid August) and they started with 278XXXXXX (were graded and available on the website a week and a half prior) and have the new label. So it just sketches me out how these cards are coming back with higher cert numbers and old holo holders when cards i subbed with #278 have the new label. So this card up for sale was graded, presumably, after mine yet has the old holder.
The card in question is a 2017 Bowman Platinum card, most of the ones graded all have the new holder with the exception of two on ebay.

Could level of service come into play? I would assume the cert# are assigned upon reception. If someone paid for quicker service after you but before the new holders were ready perhaps that’s why.

could've sworn cert numbers were assigned at time of grading, not receipt. but i guess this could possibly be why. leftover old stock? new label came out in mid june and my previous submission was at PSA at the time of the announcement and all got the new label immediately. Bowman Platinum was released 7/5/17, half a month after the new label came out.

i tested it on other cards on ebay, including their other auctions and this auction. their bar code will not scan, but the cert it good. im able to get the bar codes on other auctions to read off my computer screen with the PSA app

same thing with this auction, old holder but new cert. the barcode here scans and checks out ok.

this card, same one, has a slightly older cert but new holder.

Not sure if this is the explanation, but the certs are assigned when a submission is logged~not when it's graded. So you could have a "newer" cert for a card that popped 3 days after loggage with the older style flip whereas another card with an older cert that took 3 months to pop bears the new flip.

just seems weird since the cards were released after new flips were being returned to customers already. unless they were using up old stock.

That is also possible, but my point above was that you cannot tell from the cert # alone when a card was holdered.

i prefer the new label anyways, even if i have to pay a little more. i passed on the card in question anyways.
