I liked the coin before and still like it. It looks like (comparing side by side pic) the coin was lightened a little at PCGS. But still is a very beautiful Barber Dime.
That's the result of Pcgs optical plastic allowing more light through it.
So what you're saying it, if a coin has a green CAC in an ngc holder, it will probably upgrade at pcgs? Because the crappy plastic at ngc holds it back at least a grade?

That could be and probably is the case, but I have had personal experience with coins coming back "different". It is usually for the better, but has happened.
"If you want to know why a coin did not CAC, ask John and he will be happy to tell you."
Only if you ask before the submission is done. Usually they don't keep notes, etc.. I've asked in the past and it is unusual for them to have the information.

For sure she didn't get at least an Acetone bath? The thread was also presented masterfully as a CAC bash in disguise.

I don't see this as a CAC bash at all. It was simply looked at 2 different times with 2 different opinions.

I agree it looks "lightened".... perhaps the optical clarity of the holder showing itself as previously mentioned by @tradedollarnut ??
Edited to add: I wrote this post before I moved on to page three and read TDN's second reply about the clarity ..... totally obvious that is the case.
I think you guys are thinking too hard about it. "Optical Clarity" be damned....It's just two separate photographs under different conditions on a different day. Even if you try, it's pretty tough to get the exact same lighting/camera setup/angle/whatever on the two photos.
The only reason the pics in the NGC-53 look darker than the pics in the PC-55 is because the non-professional photographer (me) took them in different locations with different lighting conditions. There may be a very slight difference in the optical characteristics of the two company's slabs, but certainly not enough to make that kind of difference. Sigh.
This thread was not meant to be a bash of CAC or either of the two major TPG's. It was to point out that the services they provide are professional opinions, and anyone who thinks that these opinions are absolute is deluding him/herself.
Regardless, what a great hobby.
Vern l It's not having what you want, it's wanting what you've got.
What you mean to say is there are no coin Gods and opinions may vary!

I didn't mean anything........like I said ........ I love the coin as it is!
Nah ... I have had decent luck with Barbers at CAC and have seen a number of nice Barbers with CAC stickers. I think it's just more difficult to find nice, original Barber coinage. But 0 for 10 is pretty painful.
Vern, Very cool thread. Sorry to chime in so late. Here's my take.
All TPGs and CAC are wildly inconsistent.
CAC stickers are meaningless, but they're very pretty.
Send all coins to me plus $4.95 and I'll place a platinum "Paesan Bean" on it. But wait, for just $3.00 more, I'll give it an acetone bath first! (Morgans, Mercs, and Walkers only)

The coin hasn't changed the pcgs slab lets more light in when photographed.

Thanks, that was what I was told by someone else. I'm glad it wasn't messed with. It's a beautiful original Barber Dime. You don't find them like that very often.

That was my reaction at first also; however, IMO it is just the lighting angle. I see nothing changed except the intensity.

Plain and simple NGC coins are scrutinized much harder than pcgs coins when submitted to cac. There are several instances where this has happened.
But also, I can tell you several examples where an NGC coin with a cac , did not cross at same grade in pcgs plastic.

There was no lightening of the coin. Just new plastic. Quite simply while this is my coin it will never be cleaned-conserved. I love it as is.

Beautiful coin.
Interesting thread.
Interesting comments.
Would love to own that coin just the way it is. In any brand plastic or raw.
nice coin. congrats on getting it properly recognized.
Jim, What an amazing, beautiful, original coin!

So are NGC slabs now treated like Puerto Rico?
The difference between PCGS and NGC is superior marketing.
I had a number of dark brown and blue seated coins grade out NGC MS65-67 in 1998-2003 era. The MS67 was a deep blue/purple 1882 seated half.
That and everything else is better.....like the forum and Registry.
