'Light Show' Coin

I have a gold 1865 Brazil 20,000 reis coin which displays a remarkable effect. On the reverse is a shield design with raised design elements over a background which is scored - in different sections - in different directions, displaying a wonderful effect as light strikes it from different directions. This is likely not big news to most of you. But I wonder if anyone can shed some light on how the die might have been engraved. I'm talking about very small stars and lines(longitude, latitude and a representation of the plane of the ecliptic, as on the flag) over very fine lines.
Sorry, no pics. I'm not so technical. I can handle a radio, but AM only . . . .

Like this? Just a skilled engraver, nothing that an expert banknote engraver or intaglio printer couldn't do.
Nice coin.

Now that's pretty!
That's a very nice bit of engraving.
