8 REALES COB 1780

I purchased an 8 reales coin at a flea market in Madrid in 2000. The rear between the "REX" is a mark that appears to be "ME"
Looks as if the E is superimposed on the edge of the M. I have examined every proof mark listing that I have been able to find. None have this mark. Can anyone point to what it might mean. Photo attached

sorry I left he front off it is from 1780. I have determined it is Lima proofmark
Welcome. It's looks to be a counterfeit 1780 8 Reales with a LIMAE monogram from Lima Mint in Peru.

It does "look" counterfeit but it is laminated in many places. Lets see 2 images of different parts of the edge and weigh it.
Not a cob, but milled (if genuine)

thanks for milled not cob, but isnt mint mark Lima? also weight is 27 grams.
Yes, Lima and worth over $80 if genuine. I'm not sure from photo. Sorry.
The lack of edge design supports the counterfeit assessment, as well.

I agree, the edges look bad.

i totally accept your assessments, again, why counterfeit something of such low value?
Without getting into too much history and details about modern vs contemporary counterfeits, the reason is that at the time of creation, the value of the materials to create the counterfeit was lower than the value of the original coin in the marketplace. In metal content alone, the original is suppose to be ~.8 troy ounces of silver. That's, what, 13 bucks US today? How much does it cost to make a pot-metal or lesser quality silver cast? Got to be less than 13 bucks.
