List your 5 favorite non rookie HOF cards

Was thinking about this earlier this am, and most people focus on rookie cards of HOF players due to the value and appreciation of said cards. Makes perfect sense and when people talk about Mantle it is his rookie card(s) in his case or with Pete Rose it is his 1963 rookie card.

If you take away all of the rookie cards of star players which cards would comprise your 5 favorite list - all 4 major sports included.

    Great topic Keith.

My favorite all time card is the 1958 Mantle. Love his affect.

Next is the 1980 yaz. I always seemed to get double triples etc when I was 10 years old buying packs...totally reminds me of childhood with the all star banner at the top.

Third pick would be the 1974 Seaver...just a great action shot I've always wanted and never bought in a 10. You would think with the stupid amount of money I've spent on cardboard through the years I would have snagged that one by now.

Fourth is the 69 Rose. When I was growing up I traded a crazy amount of cards to get that one...for sure a bad trade in today's market but at the time I thought I hit gold for my collection.

Fifth is the 1976 hank Aaron...again bc of childhood...it was a card that was a must to complete in a collection to have a hank Aaron and was the easiest to obtain.

67 Stargell- great pic of Willie.
69 Bench- used to have a psa 8 of this card, never should have sold it.
70 Seaver- I believe this was the first star card I pulled out of a pack as a kid.
75 Bob Gibson- a cap so bright red, I gotta wear shades.
78 Brett- Anybody ever seen one without the faded yellow line on upper left of card.

Some great choices already posted, so won't bother relisting the same ones. Here's a couple more of my favorites:

    1954 Topps Gordie Howe
    1963 Parkhurst Gordie Howe

    1953 Stahl-Meyer Franks Mickey Mantle
    1960 Post Cereal Mickey Mantle
    1953 Topps Mantle
    1953 Bowman Mantle
1962 Gehl's Gold Mine Ice Cream premium Roger Maris - full length batting pose
    1953-54 Parkhurst Maurice Richard
    1964-65 Topps Bobby Hull
    1962 Salada Coin Mickey Mantle
    1962 Salada Coins Roger Maris
1964-67 Bee Hive hockey premium Stan Mikita
    1967 Coca-Cola premium Hank Aaron
    1971 Topps Thurman Munson

Couldn't stop at five; also, I know I included Maris, a non-HOFer. He's in my HOF, and that counts for more with me.

1953 Topps Mantle (What a beautiful card)
1950 Bowman Jackie Robinson( Does he have a better looking card?)
1955 Topps Ted Williams (I know same picture as 54 and 56, however colors if right jump out)
1976 Topps George Brett (Tough issue of guy who looks like a baseball player if you look it up in the dictionary)
1971 Clemente( Contrast of color and tough issue)

Every Carlton Fisk card from 73-77. Argument to be made that no player ever had a better 5 year run of cards. 73 he's just an angry young catcher, 74 is an awesome in action card, 75 is the weird batting stance, 76 is a great profile in action and 77 is one of the best photos in card history.

Thank you to everyone for the replies and a lot of great answers. It is neat to see what everyone likes, and some surprises for sure - biggest one and my favorite card as a kid was the 1976 Bench. For myself I would go with the following:

1953 Mantle - gorgeous color and image of a young Mick.

1956 Mantle - one of the most popular cards in the hobby period.

1974 Nolan Ryan - what an imposing figure coming right at you in the batters box.

1975 Aaron #1 - what a neat card with Aaron breaking the Babe's record

1976 Bench - the leader of the Big Red Machine and 1976 WS MVP.

  • My Top Five - 1970's MLB edition
73 Topps Luis Alvarado - Great background shot of cars in the parking lot.
75 Topps Herb Washington - Pinch Runner extraordinaire
76 Topps Johnny Bench - Great Photo
76 Topps Traded Oscar Gamble - Mickey Mouse hairdo
78 Topps Steve Garvey - I love how the colors Red, White and Blue are emplasized three times on the card since they are the only colors in the All-Star Shield, on Garvey's Jersey and used for the card's borders.

    1. 1952 Topps Jackie Robinson-- the card emits an awesome energy.
    2. 1934 Goudey #37- Lou Gehrig -- same...what a stunner!
    3. 1953 Bowman Whitey Ford -- Could this kid be any happier back in his Yankees uniform?
    4. 1953 Bowman Joe Adcock -- Artfully captures the joy of baseball's golden era.
    5. 1974 Topps Seaver...engaging action shot like few others...Man, what a delivery!
    HAPPY COLLECTING!!!

One of the two examples from the OP isn't a HOFer, why not include Munson ;)

  • ClockworkAngelClockworkAngel Posts: 1,994 ✭✭✭

A lot of good choices. The OP ask for HOF so will stick with those, The 64 Rose, 71 Munson, and 62 Maris are my favorites, but none are HOF.

    -1952T Mantle (is that cheating>)
-1976 Brett (just because it's such a tough card
    -1953B Pee Wee
    -1971T Nolan Ryan
    -1973T Bench
