Any of These 0.5 Bump Worthy? Unitas, Starr, Staubach, Wilt, and Kareem PSA 8 Rookies

I am going to send all of these older slabs (mixed in with a few other misc cards) to PSA for reholder into the new lighthouse label next week. All of these examples were graded prior to the 2008 introduction of the 0.5 grading system at PSA.

Question for the forum...should I send any of these in for a review in an attempt to score a 0.5 bump? If so, for which specific cards (or all)? Or is a better strategy to submit to SGC for review to score a 0.5 bump?

Fees for reviews at each card's declared value level at PSA and SGC are quite high, so I want to avoid sending something in for review that has an unlikely chance of bumping...at that point I would just pay the PSA reholder fee and enjoy the cards in the new slab. I have scored few bumps in the past with vintage cards, so I am gun shy about just blanketly sending them all in for review. Any recommendations on which cards have a great shot for a bump would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Very nice cards in some vintage PSA flips.

I would send in the Chamberlain and the Lew Alcindor personally to start with. Those stuck right out to me. Both also have large upside.

This was my recommendation before I read your post. Great advice.

The biggest lesson I've learned in this hobby, and in life, is that if you have a strong conviction, you owe it to yourself to see it through. Don't sell yourself, or your investments, short. Unless the facts change. Then sell it all.
  • I would question the centering on the Wilt and Alcindor for getting the bump, but it's certainly worth trying. Both are beautiful cards though.

I'd only think the Lew has the shot and a real one at that...great card.

I agree. I think the centering on the others will hold them back from bumping up.

I just read this article after taking in some of the comments.

As many have said, centering appears to be the #1 factoring in earning a 0.5 bump upward. I guess I will break out my Bak Products centering tool again and try to do some measurements.

Lew and Staubach. Wouldn't sub the others.

My first thoughts were Alcindor (very good shot) with Chamberlain and Staubach a very long shot at best. Hard to see the corners on the Bart Starr but if those corners are really good for an 8 it might stand a chance even if the centering is off. If it were me I would sub all but the Unitas and figure chances are none of them will bump but if one does then it is worth it. The Alcindor looks very strong to me. Good luck and keep us posted.

As blurry as the picture shows, the Alcindor looks to be the only one worthy of trying.
I would be happy that the others were 8's.
    Some big hitters there
    Good luck with the reviews

Lew is the only one I thought had a chance. All of those are nice cards though

All are very nice looking cards, but I think only the Lew has a shot.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
