I won this at the local coin club auction last night. It was a situation where the coins I wanted to look at didn't have the quality, and I didn't want to go home empty handed. I purchased this coin for a very reasonable amount, and I was quite pleased. It's nice to have technology at your finger tips to do spur of the moment inquires. B)

I guess I need the type 2; here is a bit of information on the coin:

Some company in Italy made these for ras Al-khaimah and they made similar things for Haiti and maybe some other places. While there had been NCLT (non-circulating legal tender) coins before this, most earlier ones had some clear relationship to a governmental entity including some formal contractural arrangement between the government and the producer/vendor (if not one and the same). IIRC, these were more dicey.

I remember the large display ads for these in Coin World back in the day. These represent the start of a flood of very dubious junque that still goes on today.

Thanks for the backdrop on this Bill. I couldn't find any info on where these were minted so I appreciate the insight, and also your recollection when these were advertised in Coin World- a few years before my time. Anyway, the coin resides with my other shiny's...Franklin Mint sets, Royal Canadian, etc.

Here's one I forgot about that I dug out of the drawer. It's a Kuwait 2 Dinar, 15th anniversary of the National Day of Kuwait. It's sterling as well; I can only imagine that many of these were processed during the "great melt"?

What's interesting about this piece are the reverse "rays" above the gate, and ship. Much fainter than the "rays" above the canoe on the silver Canadian dollar- almost providing a holographic effect. These were minted by the British Royal Mint.

I believe that I recollect the name of the issuer of the 1970 coin, but was hesitant to use it as the company is perhaps still in business.

The second piece you show is at least the product of the BRM, and Kuwait is clearly a sovereign state (thanks to the First Gulf War). I could include that in my coin accumulation with no qualms.
