1980 Topps Basketball Pack - Bird Magic RC Back - *GAI 8 (No RC label) Crossover to PSA Results

I posted about this in the April Pick up thread. It was previously in a GAI 8 holder without any label designation of the RC. See below for the results. Included thread from April's original post below.

*For the record also for anyone wondering, cards face up on top of pack and bottom is possible!

Found this pack after years of looking for one. 1980 topps basketball Bird/Erving/Magic RC back. I found this in an old GAI slab mislabeled(no rc notation).

I am sure someone can do a better overlay to the pack to show all of the key areas defined, but I tried to photoshop the coloration to show. Key points are the blue C starting to form on Bird plus the blue frame, julius is obvious, magic you can see his leg and half torso/arm.

Cannot wait to get this to PSA with the correct holder!

Were you able to get this pack without paying a premium, or was it still sold as a Bird/Magic pack?

I paid $150 for it. I think a normal pack (GAI) is worth about $25-50 less, but I made a strong offer because I saw the Erving and suspected a 1/2 to 1/4 chance based on that. I was pleasantly surprised when confirmation of the key RC was made and this has obviously increased the pack's value substantially, as well as crossed off a white whale of mine!

If this was the one on eBay, I was the bidder on it before the seller took it down and listed as BIN. I too immediately saw the Erving and was interested at a low enough price. Wasn't going to bid too high, but figured it would be worth the risk. It is in a GAI holder so there's always risk there, the only other thing I noticed is that the cards were face out on both the front and back... my experience, albeit limited, with these packs is the cards usually all face the same way. Good luck, hoping it crosses over for you.

Impossible to be sure from a scan of course, but the back of the pack looks totally legit from what I can see in the scan. You can actually see some of the wax marks intact crossing the seal.

I do think front and back face up is possible as well, just less likely because it requires a mid pack flip to happen. Here is a PSA 7 example.

GAI graded packs are a lot more reliable than many unopened collectors believe.

Congrats on the crossover and to the same grade, too.

Thanks guys! Glad to own it and glad to find it in a gai pack that was never known to hold the card. Can only wonder the travels it has went to get to where it is now.

@grote15 I was surprised as well at the crossover match. I asked for any authentic grade to cross so was pleasantly surprised.
