1971 Topps Baseball Vending box 3rd series on BBCE website--board/group break?

lseeconlseecon Posts: 318 ✭✭

Priced at $9,000 compared to $70,000 or so for a 1971 wax box. Works out to about $20 per card. Seems like this would be a good box for a group break. Most likely it would be a losing proposition for anyone, but still a fun and cheap way to see whats inside this box and try to get some minty 1971s. Some decent cards in the third series but no huge stars. Hoping someone with more time on their hands than me and more ambitious would see if there was any interest in coordinating with BBCE and selling perhaps "slots of 5 cards" for $100. Live video of the break would be fun too. I sure would take the gamble for at least 2-3 slots. Might be hard to get 30-100 people to pony up at least $100, but who knows.

We've already established I'm not a gamblin' man, but I just don't see it. For my $100 I can buy 4 PSA 8 and one 8.5 commons of my choosing on eBay. The condition/centering of these cards is very likely to be worse so it really just comes down to gambling for stars. Doesn't appeal to me.

I swear we tried this before and couldn't get the 50 entries needed, but could have been something else.

Put me down for 1 or 2 spots if we do it.

To be completely honest and not trying to go against the grain, but this box has made it 46 years unopened and in its original state, would love to see it remain sealed. It's to the point where we are preserving history with some of this scarcer stuff.

Always looking for OPC "tape intact" baseball wax boxes, and 1984 OPC baseball PSA 10's for my set. Please PM or email me if you have any available.

The biggest lesson I've learned in this hobby, and in life, is that if you have a strong conviction, you owe it to yourself to see it through. Don't sell yourself, or your investments, short. Unless the facts change. Then sell it all.

I may be wrong but I don't think it is possible to say a vending box is unopened or un-searched unless it comes FASC.

These were from the Fritsch vault. You can pretty much call that a sealed case goldmine in the unopened world.

I thought there was some question as to whether Fritsch vending boxes were really intact. Though I assume for ones that had been used to fill out sets that would be obvious to BBCE?

  • I'd be interested. But one thing we need to remember, this is one the series that had centering issues. This series has BRobby, Fingers, Morgan, which are tough 7's plus Garvey and a few other HOFers like Ted Williams, Jenkins, Torre and Billy Williams. There are also some tougher commons for centering, like Shellenback, in this series.

True. "Treetop" had bought one several years ago and the box was not factory intact. It wasn't necessarily cherry picked but the suspicion was it had been raided from time-to-time over the years to source missing cards for complete sets.
