Depends on the player and if the auto is jacked up. If no name prospect or perfect auto, then bgs. If blue blood hofer or auto has flaws, then psa.

    Depends...

If it's a low numbered parallel of a rookie card or a first year prospect card... go BGS.

    Anything else, go PSA.

  • Hello, Glad that I found the above posts. I have a PSA membership and have only used t hem. I have some HOF RC auto's from the late 90's early 2000's that are sharp and I want to get them slabbed. I have never subbed an auto before. After some time google searching forums and boards. People seem to think BGS for Autos for the grade. I have never sold and just wanted to get some advice before I submit, in the chance that some day hard times may fall and I must get rid of some. Would people really shy away from a nice HOF Auto in a PSA slab in favor of a BGS with the Auto grade on it? Does a nice sharp and clean auto need a grade? Or is it just a personal preference thing? Just looking for some opinions from other collectors. Thanks for taking the time to read and I look forward to the input.

    Thanks Again

Full disclosure, I'm not in the hobby any more, but while I was actively collecting, I sent everything to PSA. Those cards that would not grade for whatever reason, I'd send to BGS. PSA just seems to have a higher resale assuming all things equal.

  • Thanks for the reply Brian! I appreciate it. I am a PSA guy but noticed when I go to shows and such that for some reason autos tend to be in BGS. Just wanted to make sure that there isn't a huge difference. I also like all my slabs to match lol. Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

i think it really depends on what grade you expect the card to get. The condition of the autograph can also matter, but that concern seems to have alleviated over time at both places. Autograph grade is a completely other conversation that has all kinds of inconsistency.

BGS 9.5 basically offers an option that splits the difference between PSA 9 and PSA 10. Certainly I think most would prefer a PSA 10, but realistically that's usually much harder than the BGS 9.5.

In terms of my preference, for modern autos I prefer BGS. There are so few PSA 10 card 10 auto that they almost just can't be collected.

  • Thanks for the reply Bounce! The inconsistency is part of the reason that I asked the question. I know that with a human element that there will be inconsistencies. I am of the belief of buying the card and not the grade. The cards will grade high, I'm just trying to make sure that there is not a huge difference in value between a PSA 10 and a BGS 9.5 W 10 Auto. I am just worried about down the road a card without an auto grade may be looked at as being not equal to one with it. Personally, I just look at the auto and make sure it is clear without smudges and stays on the sticker or card. I do have a few BGS modern autos and they do look sharp in the holder and feel a bit stronger. Thanks again for the time and reply
