"Natural Untouched" NERO Roman Imperial Bronze (The importance of Bronzes untouched?)

A masterpiece of ancient Imperial Rome in the form of a Nero Sestertius as discovered after nearly 2’000 years after striking.
A rarity in this condition. This coin was struck on a massive flan.

****Nero Augustus, 54AD – 68AD**

Sestertius circa 65, Æ NERO CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG GER P M TR P IMP P P Laureate Left facing head l. Rev. PACE P R TERRA MARIQ PARTA IANVM CLVSIT S – C View of the temple of Janus, door to r., decorated with garland.
Translation: Peace (Populus Romanum) People of Rome Earth or Land Sea Doors (shut & barred) - place of Janus closed

The Jewish war broke out in November 66 A.D., probably causing the doors of the Temple of Janus to be opened once again.

Struck on a very large full flan. Untouched green patina, with stunning portrait of Nero, the portrait so sharp and powerful. Good Extremely Fine

The Temple dedicated to Janus, the god of beginnings and endings, was one of Rome’s most ancient. The sources indicate it was a rather small temple consisting of two archways with doors that were joined by side-walls. Its location is not known perhaps because the foundation was small enough to have been obscured by subsequent construction.

In 65AD peace generally had been established Nero did not hesitate to close the temple’s doors. He marked the event with great celebrations and struck a large and impressive series of coins to document this rare event. The inscription, IANVM CLVSIT PACE P R TERRA MARIQ PARTA, is one of the most instructive on all Roman coins, for it announces “the doors of Janus have been closed after peace has been procured for the Roman People on the land and on the sea”.

In relation to this, Suetonius describes the visit to Rome of Tiridates, Rome’s candidate for the throne of Armenia. Nero crowned Tiridates, was hailed Imperator and “...after dedicating a laurel-wreath in the Capitol, he closed the double doors of the Temple of Janus, as a sign that all war was at an end.”

Despite Nero’s contentment with affairs on the borders, the year 65 was not happy on the home front as much of Rome was still in ashes from the great fire of the previous year, Nero narrowly survived the Poisoning conspiracy, and not long afterward he kicked his pregnant wife Poppaea to death.

It is fact that high quality untouched Imperial Roman bronzes are in fact very rare. For many years there has been fewer quality untouched pieces coming to the market to meet a growing demand for these wonderful works of art that depict emperors, architecture, deities, strength and how the Imperial Empire which to show all the Empire the strength and power.

    ROMAN UNTOUCHED BRONZES & SESTERTIUS

Dream coins are those that when you see them, touch them, they speak to you
AND EXPLAIN I AM A 'NATURAL UNTOUCHED ROMAN BRONZE'

To have these above thoughts about a Roman Bronze is a rarity, as it is SO hard to find an authentic coin in the preservation of real meaning of a ‘natural’ bronze Roman coin, maybe just lightly brushed but nothing else.

With Gold or Silver it is far easier, only here we need to be careful about the coin, if it is genuine. Over the years some 50 years Gold and Silver were in full trays at quality dealers.

Bronze choice pieces were always in a small box in the back office tucked away. A hidden area of Classical Numismatics. (the tooled, smoothed, re-patinated, ones that had been re-built, given shiny looks, engraved to show the main features show) These were in the regular trays and auctions.

The realization that a large Roman Sestertius in wonderful condition is a piece of miniature art from the early time of the Imperial Roman Empire is creating more and more interest and more sought after. They have survived 2000 years in a metal that is living and reacts to the Earth’s atmosphere and chemical reactions in the earth. They are rarer and more sought after as the time evolves. Todat a true untouched bronze fetches higher prices that a Gold Aurea that in reality is common to the number that have survived

I have one of those Agrippa pieces, not in that top condition of course, but still pleasing.

Hi Bill, delighted you have an Agrippa, I am lucky I live in Europe as this piece was found direct in clay in
the Tiber near Hadrian Mausoleum (Castel Sant'Angelo).

For interest those coins taken from the Tiber nearly 100% of the time have somewere on the coin like black tar embeded in the coin. It is great that as it was taken from the clay we still have between the letters some clay. I had approx 70 pieces which I compared with this one and for sure this is 100% original die and the facial and hair features are perfect.

You should link a photograph of the frieze on the Roman Pantheon - the inscription on the Pantheon is almost the same as the inscription on the Agrippa coin.

    Bill correct again

The AGRIPPA coin as Bill correctly remarks is linked to the Pantheon temple - look at the facade of the temple

Roman Pantheion "[temple] of every god") is a former Roman temple in Rome, Italy, on the site of an earlier temple commissioned by Marcus Agrippa during the reign of Augustus (27 BC – 14 AD).

    M·AGRIPPA·L·F·COS·TERTIVM·FECIT

or in full, "M[arcus] Agrippa L[ucii] f[ilius] co[n]s[ul] tertium fecit," meaning "Marcus Agrippa, son of Lucius, made [this building] when consul for the third time.
