National Day 2 - Friday * updated with photos
Quick update on the National, and attendance has been very strong each day including the preview night. A few highlights below:
Unopened stuff has been very hot this year with a lot of chatter about the 1986 Fleer boxes going quickly at BBCE along with the 1987 Fleer BB case and the 1961 basketball. Steve has some nice packs and racks with a lot of new 1975 baseball racks, a sweet 73 rack, and a 1961 rack. Saw some great football boxes ( as Belz previously noted with his monster pickup of a 1973 football cello box.
Auction houses have some sweet stuff lined up for the next two months. Heritage has more game used items IMO, and Memory Lane, REA, and Love of the Game have some nice stuff coming up in their next auctions. REA has some great items for October with several Mantle rookies in mid to high grade plus Aaron rookie, CJ's, and a great haul of PSA 8 Ruth cards from 33 Goudey.
Graded cards from several dealers have been very strong, and the best pre war set up would easily be Luckiest Man Sportscards(Brady) with a massive display of 1914 Cracker Jacks, and two cases of high end T206 cards with all back variations.
Card Country (Jeff) again has an incredible amount of high end inventory with multiple 52 Mantle rookies, 53 Mantle's, 54 Aaron's, Clemente's, and 51 Bowman Mantle cards. He also has some sweet Jim Brown rookies in high grade (PSA 7 and 8.)
Photos below and hope you enjoy them.

Memory Lane with some impressive items in their booth
BBCE booth with some awesome racks
Are any of those cards moving at the asking prices I see on them?
Nice summary Keith. I'll be back Sunday. Hope Jeff sold one of his 52's.
Had a great day and did not buy any vintage stuff today, but I did grab a bunch of boxes for the little guy and I to rip open at the hotel after Gibson's! Mostly new stuff but I did buy a few 83 Topps racks plus old Donruss box.
I did see some amazing stuff at Evan's table - think the pictures speak for themselves and that 53 Mantle is amazing along with the 52 Mantle in PSA 9 and PSA 6.
woah...never seen a mantle psa 9 before!
Great stuff!!!! Cardboard porn....

Is Evan the guy that is set up at near the entrance to the PSA booth and box break area? If so, he has some amazing cards.
It was nice to meet you and your son Keith.
James
That 52 Mantle was amazing, he had some really great cards. I would sell and retire.
When you attend a national, you realize, that most of this vintage bb 50s-70s stuff is really pretty common, especially 7s and down...and if you consider that the younger demographic for the most part won't give a carp about these card,s not to mention the rise of technology that will confuse if not emulate the market, it's only a matter of a few years where many of these cards will see a dramatic decrease in demand and price, etc. JMO
That is him. He has some amazing stuff - PSA 9 Mantle, PSA 10 1953 Mantle, Clemente rookies, Aaron rookies, multiple Mantle rookies.... Imagine if more pro athletes/Hollywood types were into cards what bidding wars could take place on key cards?
James - it was great meeting you and looking forward to the next time.

KendallCat, in case you recall, was there a Bulls team bag or something on top of that BGS 9.5 Star Jordan 101 in the picture you posted? Or is that just the BGS 9.5 card itself?
The BGS population report shows that there are now 3 BGS 9.5 Jordan 101s, with the latest having all four 9.5 sub grades. I'm always curious to see these 9.5s, so I was just wondering if that was the card itself. I was at the National on Thursday only, but unfortunately, I must have missed this table.
That is the BGS 9.5 card itself and one of the three known examples out there. Evan has out together a great collection with some amazing one of a kind stuff.
KC
KC,
That is some awesome stuff. One of the reason's I used to love going to the Nationals, to see all this awesome stuff.
Thanks for sharing some photos of what's out there.

thanks for taking the time for taking and sharing the pics.....very much appreciated by those of us who didnt attend...
boy that '53 Mick 10 sure looks familiar....my fav Mantle by far.
...didnt buy any vintage?? how does that happen, u feeling ok? ha
Holy 53 psa 10 mantle...ty for sharing!
Thanks for the information, KC. That 101 Jordan has abnormally spectacular side-to-side centering, but the typical top-to-bottom off-centering. For whatever reason, BGS rarely cares about the top-to-bottom centering on this card....although they do on other Star cards. They're very inconsistent when it comes to grading centering on Star cards. It's the main reason I hope PSA grades them some day. Nonetheless, that is a fantastic card. I'd imagine he wanted $100k+ for it.
And as for the 53 PSA 10 Mantle and the 52 PSA 9 Mantle, well....he probably wanted to run your American Express through his Square card reader on his iPhone to check your card limit before even letting anyone touch those cards!
Thanks for sharing the pictures. Hope everyone had a great time at the show.
Got home last night and had a great time at the National with Jr. This was not going to be a major buying show for me like last year unless something amazing came up. My main focus was going to be reviewing/reholdering some cards, and cracking some boxes in the hotel room every night with Jr. I did have a nice crossover I was pumped about, and grabbed a few unopened items and singles.
Crossed over a 15 Cobb from SGC to PSA and really pumped it crossed over equal to the current grade. Old holder and then new one.
Found a nice addition to my Mantle run courtesy of Card Country - card is sweet and really glad I picked it up.
Grabbed a neat rack to go with my current racks with HOF players showing.
Photo of the Mantle run with the new addition - 56 Mantle PSA 8 not in photo
I had started the run with the intention of having all cards in PSA 8 or higher except for the 52 and 53, and the 56 is a PSA 8; however, I started finding cards 1-2 grades lower that looked just as nice for about 15-20% of the price of a PSA 8 card so I started shifting into those examples. One it made it a fun challenge to find centered cards in PSA 5-7 with eye appeal versus just grabbing an 8, and two it freed up $$ so I could pursue other cards like CJ's, T206's...
Hope you enjoy the photos.
KC
KC...I like your Mantle run! Each one has a very good eye appeal. I didn't realize you had a rack w/Henderson RC on top. It appears to be nicely centered...
Congrats on the crossover...too! Nice looking card...
Awesome pickups, KC! That Henderson rack looks very familiar.
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
whaaat? u got tim to dig deep into his archives, pried his hands apart and got him to sell???? well done, sir!!
Congrats on the cross and pickups. And, as always, great Mantles.
I don't even collect baseball but that display of T206 and cracker jack cards is simply incredible!
I am sure it does
You need to get your butt to Cleveland next year even if we have to send you a plane ticket!
KC
WTG KC ... nice additions to your collection. Glad your son and you had a fun time together.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
Got the scanner fired up last night for some better images vs. IPad photos of National bumps and pickups.
KC congrats on the bumps those are beautiful cards!
I know this could be sacralidge but..... every time I see a copy of the Cobb my eye is always immediately drawn to his lips. It always looks like he has lipstick on. Sorry all. bash away.

And by the way. There's nothing wrong with a guy wearing lip stick. That's not what I meant.

I have always thought the same thing about the lipstick so no worries! The Cobb pickup was the easier of the CJ pair - finding a similar Shoeless to go with it is going to be the challenge!
KC
That Cobb looks fantastic. Congrats on the crossover.
Appreciate today-
Bill
Great job Keith and it was great to meet you and talk cards at the National!
Likewise and looking forward to having you down for a game at the home of college hoops this season at Rupp!
KC
So why is the Cobb a 4? Looks like a 6 from the scan.
Thank you for the note. I have no idea why it is only a 4, and the funny thing is the AH I bought it from, another major AH plus a huge online seller all saw it at the National and all seemed to agree it was a monster of a card which was neat. All 3 gave me business cards and said if it ever comes up for sale please contact them asap. Heritage said it was the best Cobb they had seen and asked what I thought it was worth. My guess was way off and they said a number much higher which made me feel good about the pickup. Really liked the card once it arrived a few months ago, and plan on keeping it in my collection - goal now is to find a Shoeless to match it to have the pair.
KC
Keith,
Not sure what either back looks like, but there was a "4" that sold on eBay in March for $9,500.00 and yours looks MUCH NICER! Awesome looking card. Enjoy.
