How would this 1951-52 Parkhurst Howe grade at PSA?

I'm curious to hear opinions on this - have never sent a card in for grading but might do this one. It's for my collection (have never sold a card) so I won't be selling.

My initial guess would be PSA 1 or possibly 2, due to the staining.

I don't know much about this particular set so I don't know if the card size is correct and it hasn't been trimmed. If it is trimmed then it could end up in an Authentic holder assuming it's an authentic card. If the card is not trimmed and authentic, then I would agree with a PSA 1 or possible PSA 2.

Well if that's the same one that closed tonight on eBay , which I'm pretty sure it is, I'd trust the seller when he says min size. If you don't know what that means it means that PSA won't grade it because it does not meet minimum size requirements.

  • Yah, I did acquire this tonight on a Greg Morris auction. I've seen a lot of people say they've had min size for this set and then resubmitted and received a grade.

I'll take some measurements against my other 51's when i get this and make a decision then. Either way, I'm quite happy with this, love the card, and think i got it for a fair price for what it is so it's now a valued piece of my collection. Wasn't sure I'd ever own a Howe rookie :)

It's unlikely I'd buy this raw from someone else but I definitely trust greg morris auctions.

I'd try PSA and maybe sgc before going bgs with this one -- who will slab anything short.

Those who know this set understand that it is very very common to have a tilt look on the bottom border, such that there is more border on the left side between the bottom of the text and lower outer edge, vs. a bit less border towards the right side. Sometimes they are returned ungraded with a minsize, miscut or trimmed note, but if you keep resubbing, eventually it will land in the hands of a grader familiar with the set enough to know that the centering is an original factory nuance. Study other PSA graded examples and you will see this for yourself.

That being said, once graded, your card will grade as PSA 2. The general rule of thumb for back sides with album removal wear is PSA A or 1 for paper loss depending on the amount of it, PSA 1.5 for no paper loss but does have paper gained by album page paper remaining on the card due to the gluing, and PSA 2 for clean removal that does not yield any paper lost or gained but does show glue residue like yours does.

    1.5

Casey, I'd agree with that if it were 1956 or newer, but typically items grade 0.5 higher when 1955 and earlier. Could be wrong on this particular item without seeing it in hand, but I've got some comparable condition looking 51 Parkies that are 2's.

That being said, there are plenty of 2's with much much better eye appeal than others.

I think 1.5 is in the realm of possibility, more likely than a 1.

  • I realized I hadn't updated this. I sent to BVG and it came back a 1.5. I may try it at PSA one day to see if it will cross but I'm happy with it as is...would likely only do that if I plan to sell (and I will never plan to sell this). I don't keep it at home but will take a scan next time I have a look at it.
