C.T.E. study

I've said previously that I think the NFL will be defunct within a quarter-century, and this article only reinforces my stance.
Frightening stuff. Worth perusing.

Last year, the wide receivers coach for our local high school team started a flag football league for kids 6 to 12. Within weeks of open registration, he got a call from the head of the local PAL league. Apparently they had lost close to 70% of their participants once there was another option available. While many of those parents are still open to having their kids play tackle in the future, the idea of preserving six years of risk seemed to be the deciding factor. Most of the rest of us just want our kids to be active, compete, and have fun while learning the game. But we have no intention of letting our kids progress to tackle. There are even a few others who won't even let their kids play flag for fear it's a gateway to tackle in the future, despite the fact that all of their friends are playing. Our registration numbers are up this year, and this year's phone call was from a cheerleading coach who wants her girls to come cheer at our games since PAL is now gone.

It's a small sample but it seems the writing is on the wall.

I watch a ton of football but this seems pretty bad if its that dangerous shut it down . Don't keep the league going on my account I can watch some other sport or just get up and do something useful on Sundays in the fall. Its only sports , sports are not actually important we will manage without football.

I don't think you will see the NFL disband anytime soon. There's simply too much money at stake. And while middle class parents may discourage or even refuse to let their kids play football, for the gifted player coming from poverty with few opportunities of success other than sports, no amount of risk is going to prohibit him from pursuing that dream.

Also, to be fair, only those who had exhibited signs and symptoms of CTE were submitted by their families to the study, which greatly impacted the results.

Bottom line nobody is forcing these guys to play and the NFL is not going anywhere regardless of what people who are trying to save the world say.

not trying to save the world. The NFL for sure doesn't care about the players , its all about the money. And even though I'm a huge football fan , sports has little to no real meaning and the world will keep on spinning with or without football. The older I get the more disgusted I get over how money has tainted all sports . I can live without football if it comes to that.

I wouldn't let a kid play it either , its hard enough growing up in this world without being half retarded by virtue of multiple concussions and their aftereffects .

Why should the NFL care about the players? Do the players care about the NFL? They both prostitute each other for as much money as they can get.

I bet Ollie Matson went up against d-linemen who weighed less than Kam Chancellor, and he lived the final four years of his life without the ability to speak. Just wait until the players of today grow older and eventually pass on. I don't for one second envy the individual who will one day examine Jordan Reed's brain.

No one knows what the exact CTE percentages are from past eras, but I guarandamntee you they're heading in one direction from this point onward. Can the NFL withstand this? I say you guys are going to grow to love the NBA at some point in your lives, lol.

You are preaching the the choir galaxy. Too fast, too big and too furious even with the rule changes. My son played in high school and was hurt pretty badly. Was patient zero at The NY Hospital for Special Surgeries for his injury. They paid him to be be retested every year until his early 20's. He said he would never allow his kid to play.
