What should I pay? (71 Topps Clemente)

In a shop that I know the owner, prices are generally a bit high. But they have a lot of vintage inventory and I noticed a '71 Clemente that has strong (not razor sharp) but not touched or dinged. Chipping minimal but a little there. Centering nice both ways. I'm thinking in the 6.5-7.5 range. What would you pay? For my pc and would like to keep and at worst break even. I have a 6.5 PSA already but think this MIGHT be a half grade upgrade. Thinking of sending it in and maybe getting a 7. Sticker price $200 + tax. Is it worth that? (Note: I have some experience with 71s, but not VAST experience).

Before you offer, make sure you hold the card at all angles and look at the edges for signs of recoloring. Happens all too often with 71 Topps.

It would also be a good idea to measure the card and make sure it meets the standard length/width requirements. PSA has a reputation for declaring 71's to be minisized or factory short.

That seems high for an ungraded 1971 Clemente that *might * grade a 7. Based off sold listings on eBay $130 would be the highest. The trick is is if it comes back a PSA 6 you are looking at a $60 to $90 graded.

According to VCP the average for a PSA 7 is 204.12. I would be very careful before dropping 200 hundred on that card. The first thing I would look for is does this owner have other PSA graded cards. If he has a lot then I would question why this 1 Clemente is not already graded. If the owner does not have graded cards then if after looking it over very carefully it might be worth a shot. If it grades 7.5 then the value becomes in the high 300 hundreds.

At the end of the day if the eye-appeal of that card is better than the one you currently have in a 6.5 then it might be worth it even if it grades lower than expected. PSA is very tough on 71 Topps. Good luck and let us know what you decided. I have several mid-grade cards that look better than a lot of 8's. As has been said many times "Buy The Card Not The Holder".

How does it compare to this one? Pretty sure I only spent $125 when I bought it at a local card show last year.

Thanks guys, looks a half grade sharper than the one pictured.....I don't think the owner sends that much into being graded, thinking if I can get it for $150 it would be worth the gamble.....

Love the card and really love my 5.

    Dand522612,

That is not your average looking PSA 5 for Clemente. I would take that card all day every day.

Mintacular, I think 150 would be a good price if you can get it.

The photographer that captured that image deserves a medal. Iconic card.

Thanks, it has an issue in the top right, however it is a blazer otherwise. The image is almost 3D with the bat and the contrast of those beautiful black borders. The yellow, the blue and orange lettering. What a beast
