I have a $2,000 budget for the national. I am looking for cards which will serve as investments for my young kids.
Wanted your thoughts on what to look for?

    T206 Ty Cobb
    1933 Goudey Ruth
Any Caramel or other cool issue of Honus Wagner
Also I think several 1950s FB Hof Rookies in Nm-Mt are in this range or less and seem like they can only go up.
Baseball HOF 1953 Topps PSA 8s

There are some 86 Fleer Jordan PSA 8's in the $1600-1900 range on ebay maybe you can find one there a bit cheaper if you're paying cash.

  • As many 1998 SP Vince Carter PSA 10s you can buy.

What he said. Time to buy was 2008 2009 for most blue blood cards. Collect for fun... buy amazon...they may have a dividend soon. Or buy CU!

I agree, that cards should not be for investment purposes.

Assuming this is fun money on top of regular investments...

Hit estate sales and scour Craigslist.

They will quickly learn the value of money buying and selling on ebay.

I've made nice money with albums, coins, and cards.

Agree that it may be a good time to buy CLCT. It's down 16% since it's high of $28.39 on April 6. It currently yields a 5.7% dividend. However, I still think buying Index Funds is the way to go.

I bought come CLCT stock last week. Stock is at upsloping 200 day moving average which has been support in the past. Buy the dips. Dividend sure helps also.

Buy some PSA 10 cards of some of your and your kids favorite players. Doesn't have to be the rookie although that helps. Quality high grade cards of well established players will stand the test of time.

What Erikthredd said. If you are dead set on buying a card, buy the best 86 Jordan you can find.

Put the money in a good mutual fund or "smart beta" ETF and buy them a cheap photo of your favorite player. They'll thank you later!

Collect what you enjoy and if they were worth zero you would still want the cards because you enjoy/like them. I like collecting Mantle cards plus a few others, but my favorites are the cards from my youth. Anything 1973-1980 I really enjoy because they were what I collected and remembered from 35-40 years ago.

  • momo1234momo1234 Posts: 358 ✭✭✭

    great advice all around.
when i was really into collecting there were two cards i always wanted but never coulld get.
one was the jordan 86 rookie and the other was the 89 upper deck griffey. those were the cards of my youth and probably the ones i will look for first.

Find something that everyone thinks is a bad idea. Buy a ton of it and then scream from the mountain top how great it is. Maybe one day it will catch on.

1989 UD Griffey with PSA 10 PSA/DNA Autograph is a nice purchase.

Kendall, those 76 all star cards look great!

Is your 75 Ryan for sale? Looks nicely centered from what I can tell.

  • momo1234momo1234 Posts: 358 ✭✭✭

the 89 griffey autos i see are graded authentic with no grade on the card...what does that mean?

  • DarinDarin Posts: 7,291 ✭✭✭✭✭

Momo, great advice from Kendall, and if you really like the 89 upper deck griffey
you could always buy an unopened box and try to pull a nice one since they're relatively
inexpensive. Of course if you did that, buy from a reputable dealer like BBCE.

  • erikthredderikthredd Posts: 9,212 ✭✭✭✭✭

I don't know if someone has already asked this but do your kids follow sports? If so do they have favorite players? You can always go after some of the better rcs/autos of those players.

  • momo1234momo1234 Posts: 358 ✭✭✭

they are big cubs fans, could defintely pick up a lot of rizzo stuff for sure.

  • erikthredderikthredd Posts: 9,212 ✭✭✭✭✭

You could probably go with stuff from their WS team and the sentimental value alone would be worth it.

and what kinda price would i expect to pay for such a card

  • muffinsmuffins Posts: 469 ✭✭✭

but w the emergence of selfies vs autos these days, signed hof rcs arent a bad way to go. especially considering that it was faux pas to get cards signed back in the day.

however, if ya wanna really invest for your kids, a 529 plan is the way to go.

plus dictated very loosely right now. all sorts of things you can do if ya get creative.

prolly $250ish. scour ebay for the ones just graded authentic and pick the best centerrd/looking one and simply resub to have the card graded.

just know they have gotten extremely tough on grading signed hof rcs. brutal even.

KC has the best advice however I think bonds and clemens psa 10s will go up over time. Get yourself a 1986 topps traded tiffany bonds or 1985 topps tiffany clemens..find a good one, those will be tough to get at these prices after hof and more interest over time.

If you're a Cub fan, you could do signed WS balls of guys on the WS roster. That would obviously be easier to finish if you lived around Chicago and could capitalize on all the signings going on.

If WS balls would be too hard to come by of those guys, just signed balls. Or RC's of all those guys.

please disregard the bonds tiffany (for a lil while longer). the buying group has not finished landing our predetermined quota. another card experiencing the "opposite correction".

In all seriousness I would try and find raw cards that look good and self submit. If you are looking at the investment aspect sometimes you can get lucky and buy cards already graded that rise in value. Many times not so much and you are giving the profit to the person who found the card raw. There are plenty of examples of collectors hitting grand slams when self submitting and it only takes one to make up for a number of bad buys. Plus if you buy cards you would like to own the only issue is the grade they receive and you still own a copy regardless.

Not sure why people are down on the bonds tiffany cards or making fun. Think long term it's a great play, especially for someone that thinks he was just an amazing player...mays like if u will

Buy a case of 2017 topps chrome. Once the breakers get done in a few weeks the box price will move. Judge, Bellinger, Benintendi, and more. Chrome has moved north nicely the last several years and I see no reason this year won't do the same. But whatever you do don't crack it
