Supply and demand question...

The thread about market direction has led to a Interesting personal quandary about supply and demand....

With a budget of around $800, I was looking at Jordan or Magic/Bird RC's and possibly something in the Aaron Judge area.

It's a dizzying process.

Hundreds of choices and prices are all over the board even in similar grades.

Asked myself... are there that many collectors for a PSA 7 or 8 Jordan/Magic RC's?

They seem to issue a new Judge card every week which seems like a gimmick.

Picked up another hoard of 300K cards last night..

Got home and opened a box of nothing but '73 and '74 commons.

Over three hundred mint cards that probably hadn't seen the light of day in 40 years.

Despite the lack of stars it gave me goose bumps. Sharp corners and well centered for many of them.

Do I take my $800 budget and submit 100 of the best common '73/74 Topps shooting for PSA 10's?

Should I "invest" in a known RC commodity?

My goodness.... Is there really a market for '73 Topps Woody Fryman (#146), Mike Hegan (#382), and Del Unser (#247) in PSA 9 and 10?

Certainly the remaining supply would almost be nil?

The fact that this is a Pop 2 and $599 and no buyers could be an issue. Make sure you do some serious research on the commons. Perhaps pick the best 10 in terms of condition and lowest population and start with that as a small piece of your $800.

There is definitely demand for the Magic and Bird rookie in an 8. Perhaps you can find a seller who lists a really nice one at a good price. Sometimes cards like this get listed from sellers who don't follow the market that closely and steals happen.

I will go look at the 74's for you and see what those low pop cards go for.

No buyers at $399 for a Pop 2 for this 1974. I would not suggest using all of the funds on the commons venture. If cards like this are getting no interest at $399 it is probably less than $25 in a PSA 9 and if you get 8's you will probably actually lose with grading fees and shipping. Good luck.

    Thank you

  • Best advice I can give it look for deals in areas that aren't the hot topics of the moment. Aaron Judge is a risky proposition on many levels, including his age (already 26), height and weight (wear and tear on body) and that huge strike zone.

If I had $800 and was stuck on Jordan, I would look at 96-97 or 97-98 Flair Showcase Jordan cards. These have an amazing following, limited production numbers and look awesome.

The biggest lesson I've learned in this hobby, and in life, is that if you have a strong conviction, you owe it to yourself to see it through. Don't sell yourself, or your investments, short. Unless the facts change. Then sell it all.

iirc, the 73 Del Unser is a beast to find in PSA 9, so if you have some nice candidates those would definitely be worth grading. Maybe somebody else can chime in with some more low pops from 73 and 74 to look for.

Avoid judge, you are buying at the top of the market. Focus on blue blood high grade and you will be fine
