Searching for Junk Wax Jordans!...Cheap Thrills! A year after the frenzy!!

tbonewillytbonewilly Posts: 424 ✭✭✭

I thought I would have some fun tonight in between scanning packs of stars from the 1992 Topps Gold Winners cello packs (up to 364 packs right now) and crack a box of each 1990 and 1991 fleer and see what I can find. Keeping the stars, but putting the Jordan's in CS1's...Right now did 9 packs of each box and here's where I'm at with Jordans

This is what the first 18 of 72 packs yielded, onto the next 18 packs (then more 1992 topps pack scans!)

Packs 19 thru 36...I kept one pack of 1990 Fleer back since it had a Bird AS on the back (my pet project)!
No 1990 Fleer Jordans this time, gotta love how regular Jordan's already from one box! Back to scanning!

Packs 37-56, kept 1 pack back (Robinson on the back). Not very good, lousy pro Vision and the centering getting worse, only 18 more to go, will probably open those tomorrow and I think I'll have to try some 90 and 91 Skybox next!

Always liked the Fleer Pro Visions.

Successful transactions:Tookybandit. "Everyone is equal, some are more equal than others".
  • Worst centering I've ever seen on a pro-vision card. Bummer. 91 Jordan was always one of my favorites growing up.

The '90 Jordan always seems to be just a tad o/c. You have inspired me to break a couple of boxes this weekend.

  • tbonewillytbonewilly Posts: 424 ✭✭✭

Finished up the last 18 packs, centering didn't get too much better, maybe a couple of 91's have a shot, but it was a blast looking for Jordans!...I have decided that I need to expand the search and I'll pull 90 and 91 Skybox Series 1 off the shelf and rip next!..Always loved the 90 Skybox Jordan...Maybe I'll update the name of the thread and call it Searching for Junkwax Jordans!...Cheap Thrills! Let's see what we get, here's the last 4, so 19 Jordan's out of 72 packs

90 Fleer AS - too OC T/B, L/R doesn't seem right but the starts are almost perfect on the bottom
90 Fleer Regular - T/B good, L/R not so good
91 Fleer All Star Cards, 7 of them with maybe 1 good one that looks centered
91 Fleer Regular, 3 of them, 1 looks decent, might have a shot
91 Fleer LL, if going by red border, looks good, but I need to study other examples
91 Fleer AS, too OC T/B
91 Fleer PV, just plain fuggly OC!

Onto the next!..Some junk Skybox coming your way soon!

Okay, cracked open the 2 boxes of Skybox!...don't think any are 10's, but nice right off the start!...Of course now I'm thinking after this destruction of boxes, maybe I should go back to some 1989/90 Hoops packs!...Need to clean the shelves, so why not have fun hunting for Junk Wax Jordans!...Cheap Thrills. Maybe I should put some "Cheap Trick" music on in the background! :)

2nd batch not much, regular issue 91 Skybox which looks pretty dang sharp to me, measures up correctly, this one I think could be a 10

3rd batch, funny how the quantity has been going down, the Michael Vs Magic looks like a 10, the 90 skybox a bit too much OC T/B, maybe an 8, oh well, onto the last batch and then decision time on what to crack open next!

Last 18 packs and geez, just 2 Jordan's and neither are worthy of a 10. Oh well, out of 4 boxes, I have 7 cards that I think have a chance at a 10...Up next (tomorrow), will be about 60 packs of 1989 Hoop Series 2 that I'll be opening. Looking for "The Admiral's" other rookie card!...I'm creating a binder of all of the extra Jordans that I probably wouldn't spend the grading fees, but it will be a neat binder of just Jordan's. I might try and do it also with Magic Johnson and Larry Bird too...

Since this is the last for tonight, just to make sure I have enough Jordan cards showing, here's another batch of them that I had opened earlier in the year and hadn't determined if they will be considered part of a grading group...Enjoy!

What kind of price do these type Jordans fetch in reality. Can you get a buck a piece for them???? I have about 500 from 89 on up and just waiting till he gets in the news,

I would think the cards that wouldn't grade above 8 would easily gather a buck. It's a Jordan, I would suspect you could sell them a buck a piece, 3 for $2 or something like that. But the centered one is where I think there is a bit of money...The PSA 9's won't make back your grading fees in the junk era, but 10's should and the rarer inserts even better. I'm not into grading anything yet, just putting in piles what I think have a shot at a 10 and the rest in a binder..

WOW!..I started on my 89 Hoops Series 2 packs, just 10 packs and already 3 regular Jordans!..And they all look beautiful!...This was a big lot of like 300 packs I bought from some guy awhile back that had no boxes, just a pile of packs. I had opened some of these already awhile back and they looked good then too, this just confirms that I really like these packs!...I'm hoping the Jordan quantity keeps up going forth!!! Back to scanning, will have another batch up later today

Next 10 packs done and no complaints here!...2 more gorgeous Jordan's that I can't see how they wouldn't be 10's and "The Admiral" showed up too. Just slightly OC L/R (and I mean about the thickness of a card, think it still has a decent shot at a 10.
4 Jordans out of 20 packs, I'm liking these odds!...

Whew!..Okay, opened 9 more packs and got 2 Jordans and they are beauts, just one is a bit tad OC L/R, don't think it has a 10 shot, maybe a 9!...6 Jordans out of 49 packs, I like the odds!

  • tbonewillytbonewilly Posts: 424 ✭✭✭

Yea, I'm hoping so!...Once I finish up the last 9 packs of the 89's, onto this fun rip, I have 2 of the cello boxes, I'll keep 1 for now and see how this one looks!...Too much fun ripping cheap wax looking for these Jordans!..

I'm having a blast here!...Cracked open a 90 fleer wax, pulled first 9 packs and "bam", 2 more Jordans...One is way OC T/B, the 2nd one has a slight chance, just a bit OC L/R, not sure if it would fall into 9 or right on the border of a 10, not a great one, but hey, again, I'm really liking how many Jordan's I'm pulling as I go thru the packs. Up next, 4 of the 1991 Fleer Jumbo's and then back to other fun stuff

Okay, now I need a break, cracked those 4 packs of 1991 cellos (dang, 53 cards in each pack!) and voila, 6 more Jordans! (okay, not just him on 4 of them, but still pretty cool!)...Break time now for awhile

At some point I want to submit the possible 10's...I'm not there yet as I still need to get executive approval from CINCHOUSE (wife!), but my plan is early next year to get my own PSA membership and use the free submissions on some that I feel have a good shot at a 10 and see how my thinking works, then keep some, sell others and hopefully pay to be able to continue to do this a bit, and add to my collection. Right now it's all fun, but keeping the potential 10's in CS1's right now, the rest go in a "Michael Jordan" binder...

As advice. I would send these $1 jordans in a bulk submission 25+ cards for the 6$-$7 pricing they offer each month If they don't run a special, all members can use $7 for 100+ order also. Check out the packages.

Reason why I suggest not to "waste" those free submissions on these cards is mainly due to value of them and the cost you are offsetting with the "free" submissions. They can cover any cards value up to $500 from any years and expect a 10 day turnedaround. The bulk rates take about 2 months usually but you will only need to cover value wise say $10 each to underestimate the entirety so I think you could make better use out of the freebies. If you have collected before, send in your best of the best to start. Highest value.

Okay, a quiet start to the morning, it's Nationals so that is more important (where I live, today is the beginning of mini lobster season, so it's almost the same deal, travel 100's of miles and spend thousands to be able to catch 6 little lobsters today and 6 tomorrow)...Wait a minute, isn't that like buying a box of sealed cards :)

@secretstash is giving you excellent advice here. I couldn't agree more. In fact, if you don't have plans of submitting cards worth more than say $100/card, I wouldn't even bother getting a membership. As he mentioned, the value in those "free subs" is in the ability to sub cards of higher value that do not qualify for the monthly Collector's Club specials or bulk services specials. There are usually opportunities on this forum to join up with others in a group sub and you would be well served to sub most of these junk wax Jordan cards at around $7/card vs. around $18/card (the approximate cost of each sub with the membership). The 1989 Hoops Jordan cards go in the range of $20-30 in PSA 10, so subbing at $18/card is a losing proposition. Even at $7/card it would require you to sub at a high PSA 10 hit rate to make that endeavor profitable.

By the way, thanks for sharing your posts. It is fun following along with your rips. I have bought a few junk wax boxes to rip over the last couple years as well. Even if you don't hit a gradable card in the box it sure is fun ripping away. If you are looking for a new box to rip, I would suggest the 1992 Topps Archives basketball box. It is a fun product where Topps filled in the missing years of basketball cards starting in 1981 through 1991 with basketball players being pictured on cards with the designs from the Topps Baseball design from what would have been their RC years. You get cards of most of the greats from the 1980's. You average two Jordans per box. I bought and ripped two boxes and ended up getting four MJ's. Two of them were very sharp and I submitted one of them and it became my first self-subbed PSA 10 MJ! I have seen this card sell for $50+ in PSA 10 on eBay in the past so it returns a little more than the Hoops and Skybox MJ's. Here is my MJ:)

Thanks, yea, my thinking at first was to test the waters with free submissions and see how my "grading" skills were working. Someday I have to go thru all of my other cards as I have about 50 boxes of 800 count with just star players (all in penny sleeves) and some earlier 80's material. Lots of 86 Topps that I kept that seemed to pass the centering issue. At some point I think I'll need the membership to submit my own but for right now, yea, it's nice to at least sort cards out in what I think would be worth grading and then go from there. I have a bad habit of busting junk wax and pulling the good players! But it's fun!...

Broke out about 60 loose 89-90 Hoops packs!...Found a pack with the Jordan AS showing on the back so it will stay aside for my unopened collection. Got another 7 of them and 3 look to be 50/50's... Okay, now it's back to 3 boxes of 90-91 Skybox, not as much fun, but still a sleek card and easy to go thru..
