1979 Topps Hockey - Any Value to Lower Pop 9's (no 10's)?

secretstashsecretstash Posts: 1,396 ✭✭✭✭

Are any of this set's Low Pop 9's (no 10's) worth anything of notable value?

I ended up hitting a few recent lower pops. Is there an active registry chase in this set?

Pop 5 (none higher) - MINT 9 1979 Topps 7 Game Winning Goals Leaders Card
Pop 3 (none higher) - MINT 9 1979 Topps 20 Glenn Resch Card
MINT 9 1979 Topps 29 Bob Sirois Card
Pop 6 (none higher) - MINT 9 1979 Topps 97 Dave Williams Card
MINT 9 1979 Topps 222 Mark Napier Card

Pics can be added once I receive them back.

Thanks for the help.

    VCP on these:

    7 Game Winning Goals $100
    20 Resch $9
    29 Sirois $8
    97 Williams $50
    222 Napier $9

Some of the numbers are dated. The low dollar ones are 4sharpsales.

I collect this set. There are 4 of us with complete sets. The top set just dropped in out of the blue a few weeks back. He built it in stealth and then posted it. One guy is starting to look to sell. I didn't look but each one would probably upgrade 2 of the 4 sets. 4/5 would upgrade mine. To maximize each maybe send to PWCC. If you want to pm me what your looking for I'm sure we can work something out it you'd rather not wait.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

Thank you for a most complete answer on this.

I may take you up on your option to consider since you need 4 of 5. PWCC may be a bit over kill for this unless I am misunderstanding the demand. I think another few years I may have actually had something here, but the pops will be gone once people start submitting so I'll never see that day. I was honestly surprised at the lack of 9s and 10s in this set as a whole so I sent in a handful of my best to test the water. Is it due to lack of submission beyond gretzky and top hof or what is missing from the chase of this registry in particular?

I think that with the exception of Gretzky its a week year. Of the decade of the 70's 1970 is the most star studded class of rookies. '79 is the 3rd most submitted year of the decade at 12489 total submissions behind '72 and '71. (The '72 really shocked me because its not a desirable year rookies wise so I cant give you a real reason why so many of those were subbed. '72 also has the highest ratio of 10s/ submision . 1/7.62 cards subbed again which is just mind boggling. It almost makes me question the data.)

Back to '79. Here is a quick chart with the number subbed, number of 10s and ratios of 10s/cards subbed.

    Year Total 10s 10/
    -99 12489 141 88.57
    79 17237 143 120.54
    78 8570 698 12.28
    77 5143 476 10.80
    76 5149 464 11.10
    75 12304 1518 8.11
    74 11132 93 119.70
    73 10360 120 86.33
    72 26106 3426 7.62
    71 18462 510 36.20
    70 12119 243 49.87

The top "year" on the list (-99) is 1979 if you remove the Gretzky data. And while it changes the ratio substantially it is still the second toughest set of the decade to get a 10. Here is a great article from last years SMR: https://psacard.com/articles/articleview/8968/psa-set-registry-collecting-1979-topps-hockey-card-out-old-great-one

I think this is one set where you may see more high grade cards trickle in but it wont get flooded. There are very few sealed boxes out there and they command a big premium. I think the last few were north of $10K. So you wont likely see a bunch of pack fresh cards getting ripped because it would take 2 Gretzky PSA 9s to even touch the cost of the box. But you are right more and more are popping up. There is a guy on ebay who subbed a few and got 10s as pop 1s in the last year and he has them museum priced currently.

Obviously Id like to work something out with you but when I suggested PWCC I wanted you to know that all it takes are two bidders and I would be one. Not that I want to pay more than needed but just to present you with options and not feel like Im trying to pull one over on you. ;)

Great analysis again. Thank you so much for the information. That sounds like quite a lot of 1979. I wish the registry beefed up on it to make my answer more obvious on which route to take. lol Wait/sell/sell auction pwcc/etc

    Congrats!

I guarantee you card number seven will bring at least $200 via eBay auction. Not necessarily even through PWCC. Start at $100 and let it ride seven days. You'll thank me later.

I hope you're right. I am definitely selling them since I don't collect the set, I just am not sure how until I have them in hand. They literally just popped my full submission, but I only had a few other 79s within this submission. I raided 25 cards out of a gorgeous set and sent in the ones below so far. No other very low pops or anything much in the other ones so I wasn't in a hurry to submit them--figured it was 10 or bust. The Gretzky came out as minsizereq or whatever. go figure :s - It is the best centered I have owned and was hoping for a .5 to whatever grade it received. Might try BGS

N6: MINIMUM SIZE REQUIREMENT 1979 Topps 18 Wayne Gretzky Card

Really good eye you have there! I've subbed over 1,000 of these and know how tough it is. Might try PSA again on sub, but if not you're probably right with BGS. Keep us posted I'd they make it to the Bay.

Thanks man. I had a few really good hits in this full submission so I believe I have tightened my eye up a bit thankfully.

PSA seems to be reeeeeeeally picky with size on this set. I've sent cards in that are less then a hair short. Literally a hair maybe!! Depends on what ruler you use. And they get kicked back like this one.

It happens. Resubmit! Can't say it strongly enough. Especially if it's in as nice a condition as your others. I've sent the same card back in the next sub and had it graded. I could dig up old subs and show you the same card going back and watched it come back a 9. Most recent I think was a Robert or Martin. 74 ish.

Don't give up on PSA with one sub.

You've subbed 1000? Which set on the registry is your?

I had the number two set for awhile. Did most of my subbing between 2003 - 2009. I recognize some of my subbed cards in the referenced article :)

Cool! If you have any left over let me know! Where did you have the most luck tracking cards down? Sets, wax, raw? Always looking for insight.

I sold everything of value for college tuition and tossed everything else in the garbage (lots of nice raw and graded). I bought a lot of wax from BBCE and cherry-picked sets regularly. Also had a hoard of 79s from my childhood (I'm 36 so these were still expensive when I was a kid). Fast-forward to today and I find myself about to toss 30,000 1989 Topps raw cards and 200 or so graded.

Yes they seem to be real sticklers on this set AND this card!. I had a Gretzky come back twice because of MinSizeReq. I just don't understand how because I got it along with a couple of others back in 1979 and 1980 directly from packs I opened.

That game winners is a great example. The Tiger is no slouch either. Congrats again on the grades!
